Aoshima Shokudo Akihabara
青島食堂 秋葉原店
Overview
A specialty restaurant for Nagaoka Ginger Shoyu Ramen, located along Showa-dori in Akihabara, operating as the Kanto expansion of Nagaoka's renowned "Aoshima Shokudo" from Niigata. It features a clear, soy-sauce-based broth (chintan shoyu soup) with a subtle ginger aroma that wafts through the nose, and a piping hot richness from the lard floating on the surface. As the pinnacle of Nagaoka Ginger Shoyu available in Kanto, it consistently draws queues of an hour or more. The noodles are house-made, medium-thin, high-hydration wavy noodles, designed for a pleasant slurping experience with a springy-chewy texture and waves that expertly carry the soup. Toppings include tender pork shoulder chashu with a good amount of fat, spinach, menma (fermented bamboo shoots), naruto (fish cake), chopped long green onions, and nori (seaweed), presenting a classic, traditional visual. The Chashu Ramen offers a substantial portion of various cuts of chashu, irregularly sliced and piled high, so much so that there's still meat left even after finishing the noodles. Three types of pepper are available on the table, allowing you to sprinkle them in the latter half of your meal to change the flavor profile. Although there are only 9 counter seats and 6 waiting seats inside the shop, the masterful efficiency of the staff ensures a good turnover.
How to Order
1Before Entering
Located in the intersection area of three stations: 6 minutes walk from JR Akihabara Station Showa-dori Exit, 5 minutes walk from Tokyo Metro Akihabara Station Exit 4, and 7 minutes walk from Iwamotocho Station Exit A4. Closed on Tuesdays. Open continuously from 11:00 to 17:00, but may close early if ingredients run out. The main branch is in Nagaoka, Niigata, and this Kanto expansion store consistently has queues lasting about an hour. Expect a 30-person wait outside during the lunch peak around 12 PM, and 30-60 minutes wait even on weekdays. It's relatively easier to enter after 3 PM or closer to closing time.
2Purchasing Meal Tickets
There is a touch panel ticket vending machine with photos at the entrance of the store, which is easy to operate but has no English display. It's a "buy first" system: purchase your meal ticket, then join the end of the queue outside. Signature items include Aoshima Ramen, Aoshima Chashu-men (roast pork ramen), extra noodles 75g (+50 yen), extra spinach (+50 yen), extra menma (bamboo shoots, +50 yen), extra nori (seaweed, +50 yen), and omori (large size). Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
3Seating and Receiving
There are only 9 counter seats, and an indoor waiting area with 6 seats. Staff will guide you to an empty seat. The process from boiling noodles to plating is swiftly executed with artisan skill, and your bowl arrives quickly, within a few minutes.
4Other
The soup is Nagaoka's famous ginger-soy sauce, with animal-based lard floating on the surface to keep it piping hot. There are three types of pepper on the table, which you can sprinkle on during the latter half to change the flavor. Extra toppings like spinach, nori, and menma are also good for enjoying the soup as an alternative to a small bowl of rice. The Chashu-men is generously topped with a large amount of irregularly cut roast pork from various parts, so much so that you might not finish the meat before the noodles.
