Asakusa Ikutaan
浅草 生田庵
Overview
“Asakusa Ikuta-an” is a ramen shop inspired by the chan-kei style, located in Hanakawado 1-chome, just a 2-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line. Its most prominent feature is its rare 24-hour operation in the Asakusa area, allowing customers to visit at any time, whether for morning ramen, a ramen fix after a night out, or a late-night meal. The signature Chuka Soba (900 yen) boasts a beautiful appearance with a transparent soy sauce (shoyu) soup characteristic of the chan-kei style, topped with gleaming oil. Despite its rich look, it offers a surprisingly light yet deep flavor. The noodles are lustrous, high-hydration flat noodles, distinguished by their springy texture and nostalgic flavor. The char siu (braised pork belly) has an exquisite texture, just before it crumbles, and is carefully sliced to order. Toppings consist of classic char siu, green onions (negi), and bamboo shoots (menma), a simple yet highly satisfying combination. “Kara Chuka” (Spicy Chuka Soba) is a variant menu item where you can choose your preferred spice level from five stages. It features a unique spicy flavor profile, combining chili peppers and sesame with the oil film. Free rice is available by taking a “Free Rice” tag and handing it over, with unlimited refills. A popular way to enjoy it is to put the ao kappa (pickled green shiso) from the table on the free rice, and then wrap it with nori (seaweed) dipped in the soup. Attracting repeat customers with its reasonable pricing (under 1000 yen, avoiding tourist price inflation) and being open all year round.
How to Order
1Before entering
Located a 2-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Ginza Line / Tobu Skytree Line Asakusa Station, and a 5-minute walk from Toei Asakusa Line Asakusa Station. This 24-hour ramen shop in Hanakawado 1-chome is a valuable spot for late-night, early morning, and pre-commute ramen needs. Before 11 AM on weekdays, it's less crowded and easier to enter. During lunch peak (12-2 PM) and evening (5-8 PM), it's often full with waiting lines outside. Late at night, it can be calmer depending on the time, but the customer base has a high ratio of tourists.
2Purchasing meal tickets
There is a ticket vending machine outside the shop. It's a "buy first" system where you hand over the meal ticket and a "free rice" token (take from the red basket) to the counter staff. Signature items are Chuka Soba for 900 yen, Kara Chuka (5 levels of spiciness, specified verbally to staff when handing over the ticket), Char Siu Ramen, raw egg, and green onions for 100 yen. Rice is free and refills are unlimited. Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
3Seating and receiving
The shop has about 10 counter seats only. Staff will guide you to an empty seat. While watching the artisan cut char siu, your ramen will be served in about 5 minutes.
4Other
The soup is piping hot with oil floating on the surface, and despite its appearance, it has a light yet profound taste. It features flat, high-hydration noodles characteristic of the "chan-kei" style. A classic way to enjoy it is to put the free Aokappa (pickled green shiso) on the rice, and wrap it with nori (seaweed) dipped in the soup. With Chuka Soba + unlimited rice refills for 900 yen, this 24-hour shop can be used from "morning ramen" to "closing ramen".
