Chuka Soba Yamafuku
中華そば やま福
Overview
Chukasoba Yamafuku is a ramen shop located at the back of "Bourbon Dori," an arcade shopping street at JR Kamata Station West Exit. Nearby, you'll find "Kikutani," which also specializes in fushi-kei (bonito/dried fish broth style) ramen, making the Kamata Station West Exit area dense with chintan (clear soup) style establishments. The shop offers two main ramen styles. The "Chūka Soba" is an assari (light) style featuring an amber-colored chintan (clear soup) where chicken bone broth and shellfish dashi masterfully intertwine. It starts with a refreshing and gentle chicken flavor, and as you continue, the umami of the shellfish dashi gradually emerges, creating a layered taste experience. Options include Shoyu (soy sauce) for 980 yen, Shio (salt), and limited-time offerings such as Scallop Dashi Chūka Soba for 1180 yen, and Chicken and Snow Crab Dashi Shio Soba for 1250 yen, with seasonal and chef-inspired limited menus regularly appearing. On the other hand, the "Noko Chūka Soba" is a kotteri (rich) style with a creamy tori-paitan (creamy chicken broth) soup. Its substantial thickness and deep umami create a rich, full-bodied flavor that leaves a collagen-like stickiness on your lips. This style is available in Shoyu and Shio for 1030 yen each, and Noko Shio (Rich Salt) for 1050 yen, offering choices based on size and style. The noodles are medium-thin, low-hydration noodles from Kanno Seimenjo, known for their pleasant snap and firm chewiness, integrating seamlessly with both chintan and tori-paitan soups. The chashu (roast pork/chicken) is a luxurious combination of two types: pork (prepared sous-vide for a moist and juicy texture, allowing you to savor the meat itself) and chicken (breast meat, tender and moist). Extra toppings of chashu are popular (380 yen for 2 additional pieces of both chicken and pork). The ae-dama (seasoned extra noodles), priced at 400 yen (half portion 250 yen), is a signature side dish. It's seasoned with niboshi (dried sardine) powder, oil, and scallions, offering a delightful two-way enjoyment: eat it as-is, or dip it in your soup like tsukemen (dipping noodles). A limited "Ankimo Paste Ae-dama" for 500 yen is a luxurious finishing dish where the rich umami of monkfish liver paste coats the noodles. Popular with regulars, adding it to the soup towards the end transforms the flavor with an even deeper richness. Other toppings include Wonton, Ajitama (seasoned egg), Special (350 yen), and Chashu-don (chashu rice bowl) for 380 yen. The shop has a compact L-shaped counter with 8 seats. The staff are predominantly female, and the shop is frequently used by female customers, characterized by its clean and stylish interior. Yamafuku is community-oriented, sometimes offering a free egg service on days when you present a Kamata Marutoku Passport. Business hours are 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a break in between. The ticket vending machine accepts cash and PayPay (QR code).

1Before entering
Located in the back of the JR Kamata Station West Exit Arcade shopping street (Bourbon Street), close to "Chukasoba Kikutani." It's a compact space with an 8-seat L-shaped counter, a clean atmosphere with mostly female staff, and many female customers. Open from 11:30 to 15:00 and 18:00 to 21:00, with a break in between. During peak hours, there might be a wait outside, but turnover is quick, around 10 minutes (e.g., 3 people waiting outside on a weekday at 12:20; 3 people waiting for 10 minutes on a holiday afternoon at 13:30; immediate seating with one empty seat on a nearly full holiday afternoon). On Sundays, there have been instances of no wait at 18:41, so evening hours are generally easier to enter.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering
Enter the shop and buy a meal ticket from the vending machine. The vending machine accepts cash and PayPay (QR code); electronic money and credit cards are not accepted. The system for queues is fluid, so it's safest to observe the end of the line and decide whether to join the queue first or buy your ticket beforehand. There are two main ramen styles: the light "Chukasoba" (clear chintan soup made with chicken and shellfish dashi, Shoyu 980 yen / Shio; limited options include Scallop Dashi Chukasoba 1180 yen and Chicken & Snow Crab Dashi Shio Soba 1250 yen), and the rich "Noko Chukasoba" (creamy toripaitan chicken white broth, Shoyu / Shio each 1030 yen, Noko Shio 1050 yen). The "Aedama" (mixed noodles) for 400 yen (half 250 yen), seasoned with dried sardine powder & oil, is a signature side dish, and the limited "Ankimo Paste Aedama" (monkfish liver paste mixed noodles) for 500 yen is also popular. Toppings include Wonton, Ajitama (flavored egg), Tokusei (special) 350 yen (Ajitama + extra chicken and pork chashu), Chashu Don (chashu rice bowl) 380 yen, Chashu Mashi (extra chashu) 380 yen (2 pieces each of chicken and pork).
3Seating and receiving
Staff will guide you to a seat. Hand your meal ticket to the staff and wait at the L-shaped counter. Service is speedy, generally taking 5-10 minutes. On some days, presenting a Kamata Marutoku Passport may entitle you to a free egg.
4Other
The light chintan soup is a masterful blend of chicken stock and shellfish dashi, starting with a clean, gentle chicken flavor, followed by the subtle umami of shellfish emerging later. The rich toripaitan chicken white broth is a thick, creamy soup characterized by a profound richness that leaves collagen on your lips. The noodles are thin-to-medium straight low-hydration noodles from Kanno Seimen, offering a pleasant bite and firm texture, suitable for both chintan and toripaitan soups. There are two types of chashu: low-temperature cooked chicken (breast meat, soft and moist) and pork (moist, juicy, and meaty), both served. The Aedama (mixed noodles) are seasoned with dried sardine powder, oil, and chopped green onions; they can be enjoyed as is, or dipped in the soup like tsukemen, offering a double delight. Limited soups such as crab and scallop frequently appear, and double-soup variations combining these with the signature toripaitan are also popular.
