Ordering difficulty
Order verbally at your seat as there's no ticket machine; consult the owner to choose from Shoyu, Shio, Miso Chukasoba (light/rich), Mochi Buta no Abura, or weekday-limited Guerrilla options.
Recommended for first visit
First-time visitors should try Chukasoba Shoyu (980 yen) or the weekday-limited Guerrilla Shoyu (990 yen), known for unique pan-grilled chunky char siu and extra-fine wavy noodles.
Notes
Payment is cash only, the shop is closed Sundays, and with a 10-seat, one-person operation, expect delays of up to 15 minutes during peak hours; call ahead for temporary closures as there's no social media.

1Before entering

Located on a narrow alley in the Sakae Sumiyoshi area, a 5-minute walk from Subway "Sakae" Station Exit 8. Open Mon-Sat 11:30-14:30 and 18:00-22:30, closed on Sundays. The exterior can be intimidating for first-timers, and opening hours may vary slightly on some days. As it's a one-person operation with limited seating, the counter seats fill up quickly during weekday lunch (around 12 PM), and it tends to get crowded with customers returning from drinks around 10 PM at night. It can take about 15 minutes for your order to be served, so it's best to visit with plenty of time.

2Ordering and purchasing meal tickets

There is no ticket machine; you order verbally after being seated and pay afterward. Chukasoba comes in 3 types: soy sauce, salt, and miso, each with "light" (assari) and "rich" (kotteri) options. The signature menu items are Chukasoba Shoyu (980 yen), Mochi Buta no Abura Chukasoba (1,100 yen - pork lard in chicken and seafood soup), and the weekday-limited "Guerrilla Shoyu" (990 yen) and "Guerrilla Shio". You can adjust to large size (大盛り omori, large size) for +190 yen, or extra large size for +350 yen. Sides include rice dishes like Pork Tsukudani-style Rice, Soboro Don, and Nitamago Don, as well as snacks like Spicy Grilled Chicken Wings (Horohoro-ni) and Pork Belly Soft Bone Stewed/Grilled (Torotoro-yaki). You'll typically ask the owner for recommendations when choosing. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted.

3Seating and receiving your order

Total of 10 seats: 6 at the counter, 4 at tables. Due to the one-person operation, your ramen will be served approximately 15 minutes after ordering during peak times. The owner may sometimes explain how to eat the ramen or recommend toppings when serving.

4Other notes

For Guerrilla Shoyu, sprinkling the "homemade dashi salt" on the table during the latter half of your meal enhances the richness (direct advice from the owner). A unique cooking process involves grilling chunky char siu in a frying pan, which is a highlight to watch from the counter. Nitamago Don (simmered egg rice bowl) is a hidden popular side menu for which the owner can teach you how to eat it.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.
