1Before Entering

It is about a 5-minute walk from Sakae Station (subway), Shinsakaemachi Station (subway), or Sakaemachi Station (Meitetsu Seto Line), located directly in front of Tokyu Hotel. The entrance is a semi-basement staircase along Hirokoji-dori; while not very conspicuous from the ground, there is a sign. Open from 10:50 AM until midnight (L.O. 11:40 PM), it caters to lunch, dinner, and late-night ramen needs across various times. The shop is open year-round, but temporary closures are announced on the official Instagram, so it's best to check for the latest information before visiting. Peak hours are typically 12-1 PM on weekdays; otherwise, entry is relatively easy.

2Purchasing Tickets/Ordering

There are two ticket vending machines at the shop's entrance (at the bottom of the stairs), one for cash and one for cashless payments. They feature photos and Japanese text only, with no English support. The main menu includes "Aged Soy Sauce Dashi Chukasoba" (920 yen), "Light Soy Sauce Shellfish Dashi Chukasoba" (920 yen), "Katsuokombu-sui Tsukemen" (980 yen), "Creamy Toripaitan Soba" (980 yen), "Vegan Paitan Soba" (1,200 yen), and more. Sides like "Rare Chashu Rice Bowl" (550 yen), "Soft-boiled Flavored Egg" (180 yen), and toppings like "Extra Green Onions" can be added. Pre-purchase: Please buy your meal ticket at the vending machine before queuing. All payment methods are accepted: cash, credit cards (VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX, Diners, UnionPay), electronic money (transportation IC cards, Rakuten Edy, nanaco, iD), and QR code payments (PayPay, d払い, Rakuten Pay, au PAY, Alipay), making it convenient for international travelers.

3Seating/Receiving Order

Upon entering, staff will guide you to an available seat. The shop has about 30 seats in total, including counter and table seats in the semi-basement, plus loft-style seats on the second floor, making it welcoming for groups and families. Service is kappo-style, where each person receives their meal on an individual tray, reflecting the careful presentation of a Japanese restaurant. "How to Enjoy" guides for each menu item are placed on the tables, and it's recommended to follow the suggested flow: starting with the soup, then noodles, chashu, and finally using shichimi for a flavor change. Serving time is 5-10 minutes.

4Other

Table condiments include unique flavor-changing items like kombu vinegar. For Chukasoba, fish powder and shichimi are provided to enjoy a flavor change towards the end. The kabosu served with Katsuokombu-sui Tsukemen offers a refreshing accent when squeezed. During lunchtime, a large serving of noodles is free. Late at night, the atmosphere caters to the demand for late-night ramen among those returning from drinks, and it's noteworthy that there are options for those with dietary restrictions, such as the plant-based Vegan Paitan Soba. Although open year-round, information on temporary closures is announced on the official Instagram.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.
