Funamizaka
船見坂
Overview
A specialty shop for Hakodate shio ramen, nestled in an alley of Ginza for over 20 years. Located on a quiet street just one block off central Ginza, a 3-minute walk from Higashi-Ginza Station, it's popular as a 'shime ramen' (a ramen meal after drinking) because it stays open until 4 AM. The signature dish is 'Shio Soba' (900 yen). Its golden, clear soup, extracted from konbu (kelp), dried scallops, chicken bones, and pork bones, boasts a rich umami. While slightly richer than typical salt ramen, it embodies the classic Hakodate shio ramen style, offering depth through the umami of its dashi (broth). The thin, yellow Chinese-style noodles (chuka-men) intertwine perfectly with this mineral-rich soup, creating a refreshing yet never tiring finish. Toppings include chashu (roast pork), menma (bamboo shoots), naruto (fish cake), nori (seaweed), and spinach, a traditional combination. The menu offers a wide variety beyond just salt ramen, such as 'Ajitama Shio Soba' (salt ramen with seasoned egg, 1,000 yen), 'Toku Shio Soba' (special salt ramen, 1,100 yen), 'Ebi Wonton Soba' (shrimp wonton noodles, 1,250 yen), 'Asari Soba' (clam noodles, 1,250 yen), 'Kaisan Tanmen' (seafood tanmen, 1,450 yen), and 'Miso Butter Corn Ramen' (1,200 yen). Many regulars frequent the shop specifically for the 'Asari Soba' or 'Ebi Wonton Soba'. An extra-large portion of noodles is free, and the reasonable pricing for Ginza is another welcome aspect. The interior features 9 counter seats and 2 tables for 4, totaling 17 seats. The shop attracts many international visitors and continually adapts by, for example, recently supporting credit card payments. The tables are stocked with garlic, yuzu kosho (citrus chili paste), kuro shichimi (black seven-spice blend), and black pepper; the kuro shichimi pairs particularly well with the shio soup.
How to Order
1Before entering the shop
A street-level shop located on a backstreet, one block from Showa-dori, a 3-minute walk from 'Higashi-Ginza' Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. Operating hours are Mon-Sat 11:00-04:00 (L.O. 03:30), serving until late night, and Sun/Hol 11:00-22:00. They operate continuously without a mid-day break, making it relatively easy to enter outside of the lunch peak (around 12:00). Even during late-night hours, there's a steady stream of customers, but quick turnover means short wait times.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering
There is a meal ticket machine at the shop entrance, which is easy to operate with photos (no English notation). Choose from a rich menu including the signature 'Shio Soba' (900 yen), 'Ajitama Shio Soba' (with seasoned egg, 1,000 yen), 'Toku Shio Soba' (with generous toppings, 1,100 yen), 'Asari Soba' (with rich clam umami, 1,250 yen), 'Ebi Wonton Soba' (1,250 yen), Miso Butter Corn Ramen, and Seafood Tanmen. A large portion of noodles is a free service. Payment is accepted via cash, transportation IC cards (such as Suica), and credit cards (QR code payment is not accepted).
3Seating and Receiving
There are 17 seats in total, with 9 counter seats and 2 tables for 4 people. Take an available seat and place your meal ticket on the counter. Service time is approximately 5-10 minutes. Multinational staff work briskly and are able to assist international customers.
4Other
Garlic, yuzu kosho, kuro shichimi, black pepper, and vinegar are available on the table. Kuro shichimi pairs particularly well with the shio soup; adding a small amount later enhances the aroma and changes the flavor profile. 'Toku Shio Soba' and other 'Toku' (special) menu items are generously topped, making them a good choice for first-time visitors seeking satisfaction. The free large portion of noodles is a valuable service in the Ginza area, so it's recommended to actively utilize it when you want a hearty meal.
