Hakata Isso Gion
博多一双 祇園店
Overview
This Tonkotsu ramen shop is conveniently located a 2-minute walk from Gion Station (Fukuoka City Subway) and within a 10-minute walk from Hakata Station. Its signature is the rich, foamy 'Tonkotsu Cappuccino' soup, identical to that served at its main branch east of Hakata Station. With a cozy interior featuring 6 counter seats and 6 table seats, it's generally less crowded than the main branch, offering an easier visit. Noodle firmness can be customized to barikata (very firm), kata (firm), or yawa (soft), and additional noodle refills (kaedama) are available. On each table, a selection of condiments like the distinctive white pickled ginger from the Hakata Ikkousha lineage, intensely spicy karashi takana, sesame, garlic, and pepper are provided for flavor customization. Ordering is done via a ticket vending machine; during busy periods, tickets are purchased while queuing. Please note, only cash payments are accepted, and English assistance is available.
How to Order
1Before Entering
Located in Gionmachi, near Hakata Ward Office, a 2-minute walk from Gion Station. Open from 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM the next day; closed on irregular days, so checking their SNS for the latest information before visiting is recommended. Among Hakata Isso's three branches, this branch usually has a shorter wait than the Nakasu branch (night operation only) or the Hakata Station East main branch (long queues); expect less than 10 people on weekdays at lunch, and 20-40 minutes on holidays. The queue is on the sidewalk outside the shop; sun protection is recommended in summer.
2Purchasing Tickets and Ordering
After queuing and receiving staff instructions, purchase meal tickets from the vending machine on the left inside the shop (pay-after-queueing). The ticket machine has photos and English descriptions, making it easy for first-time visitors to choose. Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted. Signature items include "Ramen" (around 960 yen) and foamy tonkotsu "Ajitama Ramen" or "Special Ramen" (up to around 1,410 yen), with an extra 替玉 (kaedama) (extra noodle) for 100-150 yen. When handing the ticket to staff, specify noodle firmness from "B (barikata) (very firm) / K (kata) (firm) / Y (yawa) (soft)".
3Seating and Receiving Your Order
After handing over your meal ticket, staff will guide you to one of the 6 counter seats or small table seats (12 seats total). Tables are close together; it's more suited for solo diners or small groups rather than larger parties. From seating to service, expect 5-10 minutes; turnover is relatively fast even during peak queue times.
4Other Information
The table is equipped with Hakata Ikkousha-style white beni shoga (red pickled ginger), spicy karashi takana (pickled mustard greens), ground sesame seeds, ニンニク (ninniku) (garlic), vinegar, and pepper. The signature "tonkotsu cappuccino" foamy soup is typically enjoyed plain for the first sip, then with small additions of beni shoga and karashi takana to experience flavor changes. When ordering a ramen set, refills of rice may be available, so it's a good idea to check with the staff.
