Hirochan Ramen!
ひろちゃんラーメン!
Overview
Located a 4-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit, nestled quietly in the bustling north exit area, Hirochan Ramen is a "Chan-kei" (ちゃん系) ramen shop. This establishment is operated by individuals associated with Chie-chan Ramen, which originated in Kanda. As a member of the "Chan Noren Kumiai" (ちゃん暖簾組合), it boasts a relatively easy-to-access location with shorter queues compared to other Chan-kei shops. The soup is a savory soy sauce-based broth with a strong salty flavor, utilizing an animal-based dashi (動物系出汁 - animal-based broth) and potent kaeshi (カエシ - savory soy sauce base). A thick oil film covers the surface, providing excellent heat retention. From the very first bite, a rich umami and a satisfying, moderate richness wash over you, creating that uniquely repeatable flavor characteristic of the Chan-kei style. The noodles are a flat type from Shinjuku Daruma Seimen, featuring a smooth and slippery texture akin to Inaniwa Udon, and they beautifully entwine with the soup. Toppings include a generous amount of thinly sliced chashu (薄切りチャーシュー), a hallmark of the Chan-kei style, with Kujo green onions (九条ネギ), nori (海苔 - dried seaweed), and menma (メンマ - seasoned bamboo shoots) adding delightful accents. The chashu is prepared with the philosophy of "freshly sliced" (切りたて), offering a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that is incredibly satisfying. The signature Chuka Soba (中華そば - Chinese noodles) for 950 yen typically comes with 4-5 slices of chashu, and the Chashu-men (チャーシュー麺 - chashu noodles) for 1250 yen includes an even larger portion. With rare operating hours—24 hours on Saturdays and until 5 AM from Monday to Thursday—it's perfect for a late-night ramen (〆ラーメン - shime ramen) after the last train or an early morning ramen (朝ラー - asa-ra, morning ramen) before a business trip. The table is equipped with ichimi togarashi (一味唐辛子 - single-spice chili powder), garlic, and pepper, allowing for an enjoyable flavor transformation (味変 - ajibun) in the latter half of your meal. Paper aprons and tissue boxes are also provided, ensuring a comfortable visit even for those wearing white shirts.
How to Order
1Before entering: A Chan-kei ramen shop quietly standing in the Kitaguchi entertainment district, a 4-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station West Exit. Operating hours vary greatly by day of the week: Mon-Thu 11:00-5:00 next day (L.O. 4:30), Fri 11:00-24:00, Sun 0:00-23:00 (L.O. 22:30), and Saturday is 24-hour operation, a unique schedule. It's one of the few shops that can be used as an option when other shops are closed, such as for late-night ramen after the last train or early morning ramen. The line is relatively calm, making it an easy-to-enter location even among Chan-kei shops.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering: The ticket machine is located directly in front of the store entrance. If there are empty seats, buy a ticket and proceed directly to a seat. During busy times, observe the queue and decide whether to join the back of the line and buy a ticket when it's your turn, or buy a ticket first and then wait. There are no photos or English, so it's advisable to check the menu items beforehand (Chuka Soba / Chashu-men / Mori Chashu / White Rice / Green Onions / Menma). The signature items are Chuka Soba for 950 yen, Chashu-men for 1250 yen, extra Green Onions for 100 yen, Menma for 200 yen, and White Rice for 150 yen. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted.
3Seating and receiving: Approximately 20 seats in total, with 16 counter seats and 2 two-person tables. Hand your meal ticket to the staff, and your ramen will be served in 3-5 minutes with speedy service. Water, paper aprons, and tissue boxes are self-service and are available on the table.
4Other: The tabletop is equipped with flavor-changing items such as ichimi togarashi (single-spice chili powder), garlic, and pepper. A characteristic of Chan-kei ramen is the generous amount of chashu, which becomes even more satisfying when combined with rice (white rice is ordered separately). It's common to change the flavor halfway through with ichimi or garlic. The noodles are flat-type from Shinjuku Daruma Seimen, characterized by a smooth texture like Inaniwa udon, a bowl designed to enjoy the quality of the taste rather than the quantity. After finishing your meal, lift your bowl and quietly exit the shop.
