Machida Shoten Yokohama Ekimae
町田商店 横浜駅前店
Overview
Machida Shoten is a leading Iekei ramen chain with branches nationwide, and its Yokohama Ekimae (station front) store is located in the competitive Tsuruyacho area on the west side of Yokohama Station. It is highly regarded for its consistently excellent ramen, made possible by a central kitchen system, allowing customers to easily enjoy authentic Iekei satisfaction despite being a chain. It's a popular spot in Yokohama, the home of Iekei, bustling with customers day and night. The soup is pork bone shoyu (soy sauce) based, with a well-balanced blend of aromatic sweetness from chicken oil, sharpness from the shoyu tare, and richness from the pork bones. The unique "pork bone" smell is relatively suppressed, leading many to say it's "easy for Iekei beginners to try". The noodles are short, medium-thick, and springy, effectively lifting the rich soup. It comes with large, soft chashu (braised pork), spinach, nori (seaweed), and its trademark quail egg. One of the joys is the wide array of table condiments. You can change the flavor with garlic, tobanjan (chili bean paste), and ginger, or add plenty of free "kizami onion" (chopped onion) for a crunchy texture and refreshing sweetness. The side menu is also extensive, featuring miso ramen, shio ramen, and gyoza. The lively and attentive service is also a specialty, with staff sometimes seeing customers off at the exit.
How to Order
1Before entering the store
It's about a 5-minute walk from Yokohama Station West Exit, located in the ramen battleground of Tsuruyacho. Due to its station-front location, it's bustling, especially during lunchtime and late-night after-drinking hours. Depending on the time, there might be a queue of about 10 people outside, so if there's a line, join the end. If there's no wait, you can enter directly.
2Purchase meal ticket / Order
There's a ticket vending machine near the entrance. It's a touch-panel type with dish photos, making it easy to visually choose your menu. Payment can be made with cash or transportation IC cards (like Suica). Credit cards and QR code payments are not accepted. Purchase your meal ticket and take a seat.
3Seating and Receiving
After taking a seat, staff will ask for your preferences (konomi) regarding noodle firmness (men no katasa), soup richness (aji no kosa), and oil quantity (abura no ryo), typical of Iekei style. If you have no specific preference, "normal" (futsu) is fine. The store is lively with music playing, so it's good to speak clearly. Expect to wait around 10 minutes for your order.
4Other
On the table, there are garlic, tobanjan, ginger, and grated sesame, plus free chopped onions (kizami negi) to enjoy changing the flavor. During lunchtime, rice is free and refills are unlimited (may vary depending on the time of day). It's also a classic to dip nori into the soup, wrap it around rice, and eat it. There's also a service where you can earn points by finishing your soup, which can then be exchanged for free toppings.
