Cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted. This popular store, directly connected to Sakae Station's underground mall, tends to be full during weekday lunch hours.

1Before entering the store

A street-level store located in the restaurant area on the B1 floor of Chunichi Building, directly connected to Sakae Station and Sakaemachi Station via an underground mall. Accessible without getting wet from exit 13. Open daily from 11:00 to 21:00 with no regular holidays. Weekday lunch around 12:00 and weekend lunch times tend to be full, and after noon on Saturdays and Sundays, periods when you can enter without queuing alternate with periods when there is an outside wait. It is relatively easier to enter after 14:00 and after 19:00.

2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering

Purchase meal tickets from the vending machine at the entrance. It's a touchscreen type with photo displays and English options, designed to be easy to use even for first-timers. The main menu items are the signature Chuka Soba (1,000 yen), Negi Chuka Soba (1,200 yen), Karashi Chuka (1,100 yen), and Tsuke Chuka (1,100 yen). The Special Chuka Soba (1,200 yen) comes with extra thinly sliced chashu. When you select a noodle dish, a lamp at the bottom of the ticket machine flashes, allowing you to also order free rice (choose from small, medium, or large) simultaneously. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted.

3Seating and receiving your order

Hand your meal ticket to the staff and proceed to your assigned seat. The seating is primarily counter-style, with counters arranged outward from the inner aisle. Your order will be served in about 5 minutes. If you ordered medium rice, it often comes out before the ramen, allowing you to start eating with "Yukari" furikake and the takuan (pickled daikon) available at the table.

4Other information

If you tell the staff "kotteri (rich)", the soup can be changed to one with increased back fat. On the table, you'll find chopped garlic (ninniku), chili oil (ra-yu), and white pepper. It's common to first enjoy the clear tonkotsu-shoyu flavor, then add garlic and pepper in the latter half to enhance the tonkotsu richness. It's also a popular custom to dip the free rice in soup and top it with thinly sliced chashu to create "meat rice." For Karashi Chuka, the red chili peppers sink to the bottom, so stir well before eating to avoid a sudden burst of spiciness.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.
