Mazesoba Shichi
まぜそば七
Overview
"Mazesoba Shichi" is a specialty mazesoba shop that has been operating for over 11 years along Sakurazaka street at 16-10 Sakuragaoka-cho, a 3-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station and 2 minutes from the New South Exit. Having been relocated and renovated over 10 years ago, it has become one of Shibuya's leading mazesoba specialty shops, firmly establishing itself as a long-standing establishment. The highlight of their signature Tokusei Mazesoba (Special Mazesoba, 1250 yen) is the chashu (roasted pork), which is simmered for a long time until it's so tender it falls apart, then grilled over charcoal to impart a fragrant aroma. While maintaining a surprisingly light and easy-to-eat profile, the highly perfected dish features a sharp, soy-sauce-based sauce with fish powder that coats the medium-thick wavy noodles exceptionally well. The design allows for an even richer flavor transformation (ajien) by adding table condiments like vinegar, chili oil, minced garlic, and pepper while the dish is still hot, with the crunchy accent of fried onions tying the whole dish together. Noodle size can be chosen from four options: Small (120g), Regular (170g), Large (250g), and Extra Large (340g), all at the same price, a welcome feature for increasing the portion size. There's also a rich variety, including Mazesoba (920 yen), Ajitama Mazesoba (Mazesoba with flavored egg, 1070 yen), Taiwanese Mazesoba, and Shio Mazesoba (Salt Mazesoba), allowing you to choose according to your preference. It's a popular shop that is crowded all day long, often full right after opening before noon on weekdays, and with an 8-person queue even at 9:30 PM, but the turnover is fast, so seating is usually available within about 15 minutes. The ordering process involves buying a meal ticket from a vending machine (kenbaiki) and then waiting on a chair outside, with staff asking for your desired noodle portion while you wait. The clientele is generally young, and the shop is supported as a go-to spot whenever people want mazesoba in Shibuya.
How to Order
1Before entering
A specialty mazesoba shop operating for 11 years, located along Sakurazaka at Sakuragaoka-cho 16-10, a 3-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station and 2 minutes from the Shin-Minamiguchi (New South Exit). Open Mon-Fri 11:30-22:45, Sat/Sun/Holidays 11:30-21:45. Closed from Dec 30 to Jan 4. A popular shop that is crowded all day, often full right after opening on weekday mornings, and with 8 people waiting even at 9:30 PM. The turnover is fast, so you can usually be seated in about 15 minutes.
2Purchasing meal tickets
There is a ticket vending machine near the entrance; you purchase your meal ticket before joining the queue. The vending machine does not have English descriptions, but it has photos, making it easy to choose (difficulty level 2). Signature items include Mazesoba (920 yen), Tokusei Mazesoba (Special Mazesoba) (1250 yen), Ajitama Mazesoba (Mazesoba with seasoned egg) (1070 yen), Taiwan Mazesoba, and Shio Mazesoba (Salt Mazesoba). You can choose from 4 noodle sizes: Small (120g), Regular (170g), Large (250g), and Extra Large (340g), all for the same price. Staff will ask about your desired noodle portion while you wait on the chairs outside. Payment is accepted via cash and QR code, but credit cards and electronic money are not accepted.
3Seating and serving
After presenting your meal ticket, wait on the chairs outside the shop. You will be guided to a seat when one becomes available. Due to the fast turnover, you can often be seated in about 15 minutes, and service after being seated is also quick.
4Other
The signature Tokusei Mazesoba (1250 yen) features char siu that is slowly simmered until it's melt-in-your-mouth tender, then grilled over charcoal for an aromatic finish. The medium-thick, curly noodles are well coated in a sharp, soy-sauce-based tare with fish powder, and fried onions add a textural accent. For a change in flavor, adding table condiments like vinegar, chili oil, minced garlic, and pepper while it's hot further enhances the rich flavor. The option to choose from 4 noodle sizes all at the same price is a welcome feature for customers who desire more quantity.

pic.twitter.com/hJeCyCtzPD
