MEN Kurai
MENクライ
Overview
MEN CURRY (MENクライ) is a ramen shop nestled in a residential area of Shiba, a short walk from Hamamatsucho / Daimon Stations (JR and Toei Asakusa Line). It's known for its homemade, extremely thick noodles and is part of the "Chuka Soba Waka" group, a popular shop in Shinagawa. It gained recognition by winning first place in the New Tsukemen category of the 2021 TRY Ramen Awards. A noodle-making machine is visible through the glass at the storefront, showcasing their confidence in the noodles made daily in-house. Its greatest feature is the ultra-thick, flat, hand-kneaded noodles, which can be mistaken for udon. Made with a green bamboo kneading method similar to Sano Ramen, they have a unique elasticity that feels more "sticky" than "chewy," and the aroma and sweetness of wheat return with every bite. It's a bowl where the sensation of "eating noodles" takes center stage. The soup is a shoyu (soy sauce) base combining niboshi (dried sardines) and pork, with a subtle flavor designed to let the noodles shine. Signature dishes include Special Shoyu Ramen, Aburasoba (oil noodles) with well-coated sauce and aromatic oil, and Tsukemen (dipping noodles). The plump wontons with a hint of ginger, the deeply marinated ajitama (seasoned egg), and the three slices of chashu (roast pork) are also highly praised. During winter, limited menus such as miso nabe-yaki (hot pot style) ramen are also offered.
How to Order

1Before entering
Located in a residential area one street off the main road, about a 7-10 minute walk from Hamamatsucho Station or Daimon Station. Open daily, operating in two shifts: lunch (11:00-14:30) and dinner (17:00-20:30). It is a long, narrow shop with only counter seats. During peak hours, there may be a short wait, but on weekday afternoons and evenings, you can often enter without queuing.
2Purchase meal ticket / Order
Purchase your meal ticket at the vending machine immediately after entering, then take a seat. The vending machine does not have food photos or English descriptions, so it is advisable to decide on your menu items such as Special Shoyu Ramen, Aburasoba, or Tsukemen, and whether you want a large size (omori (large size)), beforehand. Side dishes like tamago kake gohan (egg over rice) can also be chosen at this time. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
3Seating / Receiving
There are 11 counter seats. Hand your meal ticket to a staff member and wait. Since the extremely thick noodles take time to boil, expect to wait about 7-10 minutes for your order to be served.
4Other
Condiments available at the table include chili oil (ra-yu), vinegar, and grated garlic; adding them midway through eating Aburasoba allows you to enjoy a change in flavor. Aburasoba also comes with a separate seafood soup, which can be drunk at the end to cleanse your palate. Given the strong presence of the noodles, consider whether you can finish a large size (omori (large size)) before ordering it.
