Men ni Hikariwo
麺に光を
Overview
Nestled in the basement of the LEVANGA Shinsaibashi Building in Shinsaibashi Amerikamura, Men ni Hikari wo Namba is a truly unique ramen shop where all menu names are derived from music genres, a concept rarely seen elsewhere. The lineup, featuring HIPHOP (Duck Soba), R&B (Duck and Seafood), PUNK (Shellfish Soba), and JAZZ (Limited Miso Soba), embodies an identity unique to this main branch, blending the cultural context of Amerikamura – a hub for trendsetting – with the poetic sentiment of the shop's name, 'Men ni Hikari wo' (Light on Noodles). The soup primarily features a clear soy sauce broth (清湯醤油 / chintan shoyu) made from Kyoto duck and domestic chicken bones. While centering on the rich umami of duck, the soy sauce seasoning (醤油ダレ / shoyu dare) is kept subtle, designed to a perfect balance that preserves the delicate profile of the dashi (出汁 / dashi - broth). Its light and pure finish allows for smooth, continuous drinking with minimal impurities. In Osaka, where rich paitan (白湯 / paitan - cloudy white soup) ramen typically dominates, this shop stands out as a purveyor of precise chintan (清湯 / chintan - clear soup) ramen, earning strong support from ramen aficionados. The noodles are the most distinctive feature. These thick, flat noodles boast a smooth and chewy texture, offering a satisfying bite and an exquisite way they intertwine with the soup. The plating showcases the noodles beautifully folded, glistening and reflecting light in the soup—truly embodying the shop's name, 'Men ni Hikari wo'. This visual experience is a core performance of the main branch, setting the stage for each bowl. Toppings include two types of chashu: duck and pork shoulder loin, along with bamboo shoots (穂先メンマ / hosaki menma), white leek, fried leek, and yuzu peel. You can enjoy the contrast between the easy-to-eat duck chashu, which lacks the typical gamey flavor, and the thinly sliced rare pork. A delightful touch is the aroma of yuzu peel rising towards the end, a thoughtful design that ensures an enjoyable experience until the very last bite. As a generous service from the main branch, registering as a LINE friend offers a free seasoned egg (味玉 / ajitama) or extra chashu. Adding them on LINE before your meal allows you to enjoy an even better deal. This shop is perfect for travelers seeking an authentic bowl of ramen, a tranquil escape from the bustling atmosphere of Amerikamura.
How to Order
1Before Entering
A popular shop located in the B1 floor of LEVANGA Shinsaibashi Building in Shinsaibashi America Mura, a 5-minute walk from Yotsubashi Station and 6-minute walk from Osaka Namba Station. It operates in two shifts, lunch and dinner, on Mon, Tue, Fri, Sat, Sun from 11:30-15:00 / 18:00-20:30, and is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Since it's on the B1 floor and the exterior is unassuming, look for the shop's signboard and go down the stairs for your first visit. Several groups often line up before opening, especially on weekends, where waiting times can reach around 10 people. With only 7 counter seats, waiting inside the shop is not possible, so it's customary to wait in line outside the building.
2Purchasing Tickets / Ordering
Purchase meal tickets from the vending machine at the shop entrance. The vending machine has English descriptions but no photos. Menu names are derived from music genres, featuring HIPHOP (Duck Soba 990 yen), R&B (Duck and Seafood Soba 1300 yen), PUNK (Clam Soba 1050 yen), and JAZZ (Miso Soba, limited to about twice a month). For first-time visitors, the signature HIPHOP (Duck Soba) is a classic choice, and understanding the mapping between menu names and content in advance will prevent confusion at the vending machine. Payment is cash only.
3Seating and Receiving
There are only 7 counter seats. The staff will guide you to your seat, so sit down and hand them your meal ticket. The serving is meticulous, with beautifully arranged noodles and a shimmering appearance as the noodles reflect the soup, which is the origin of the shop's name (men-ni-hikariwo means "light on noodles").
4Other
The ramen consists of a clear soy sauce soup made from Kyoto duck and domestic chicken bones, flat, medium-thick, smooth, and chewy noodles, two types of chashu (duck and rare pork), menma bamboo shoots, white negi and fried negi, and yuzu peel. In the latter half of the meal, the aroma of yuzu peel emerges, subtly changing the flavor profile. There are also free services like a seasoned egg or chashu for LINE friends, so adding them as a friend before your meal can be beneficial.
