Menya Hulu-lu
麺屋 Hulu-lu
Overview
A Hawaiian-themed ramen shop, listed among Tabelog's Top 100, located about a 10-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit, closer to a residential area. Crafted by owner Mr. Furukawa, a Hawaii enthusiast, the shop specializes in light (tanrei-kei) chicken broth ramen, offering refined bowls and a wide variety of seasonal limited-time menus. Their signature Shoyu SOBA and Shio SOBA feature a unique style with a small amount of minced meat floating in a clear chicken broth (torichintan - clear chicken soup), showcasing a distinct dashi flavor and a well-defined tare (kaeshi - seasoning base). The moderate oil floating on the surface results in a light yet profound finish. The noodles are homemade thin, straight whole wheat noodles, with a pleasant wheat aroma and a firm, snappy texture that pairs well with the soup. Toppings include large, lightly seasoned chashu (braised pork), menma (bamboo shoots), kaiware (radish sprouts), ito togarashi (shredded chili pepper), and iwa nori (rock seaweed), creating a visually appealing composition. Coupled with wooden spoons (renge) and bowls, the presentation integrates perfectly with the shop's Hawaiian atmosphere. The true essence of this shop lies in its limited-time menus, which appear almost every month. These are diverse, including Soy Milk Tantanmen, Spicy Mazesoba, TOMATO Ramen, "Chokotto Niboshi SOBA" (light sardine broth), Tori Paitan SOBA (creamy chicken broth), Hawaiian Cold Lomi Lomi Salmon Basil SOBA, the 100-Hour Curry Collaboration Tsukemen (dipping noodles) series (including VTuber collaborations), Year-End Collaboration Ramen, Anniversary Ramen, and many more. This wide variety, which sees many repeat customers leaving notes, ensures you can encounter a different bowl each season. Popular side dishes include the Truffle-scented Aedama (seasoned extra noodles) for 400 yen, and TKM (Tamago Kake Men - egg over noodles), which many enjoy adding to their soup towards the end to savor a double-noodle experience. Hawaiian side dishes like Spam Musubi are also available, and the stylish interior makes it a welcoming place for solo female diners and families.
How to Order
1Before entering
Located in a residential area, a 10-minute walk from JR Ikebukuro Station West Exit, or a 5-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line Ikebukuro Station C6 Exit. Open Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Public Holidays 11:00-15:00 / 17:30-21:00, Sun 11:00-15:30 (continuous operation) (Closed on Tuesdays). The interior has a Hawaiian theme, giving it a stylish appearance unlike a typical ramen shop. On weekend lunchtimes, queues of 10 or more people form, while weekday evenings sometimes have relatively easier entry. Limited menus often sell out early.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering
There is a ticket vending machine at the shop entrance (some photos only, no English notation). If there are empty seats, buy a ticket and proceed directly to a seat. If there is a queue, observe the line and decide whether to join the back or buy a ticket first. Popular items include Shoyu SOBA, Shio SOBA, Special Shoyu SOBA for 1480 yen, and numerous limited items such as 100-hour curry collaboration tsukemen, anniversary ramen, and chilled soy milk tantanmen. Aedama (truffle-scented mixed noodles) for 400 yen is a hidden popular side dish. Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted.
3Seating and receiving
Total of 11 seats: 5 counter seats + 2 two-person tables and 1 four-person table. The stylish and clean interior creates an atmosphere that welcomes solo female diners and families. Serving time is generally 10-15 minutes (may vary slightly during busy times). After the bowl is served, it is recommended to first take a sip of the soup, confirming the aroma of chicken broth and lemon peel, then slurp the noodles.
4Other
Black pepper, lemon, etc., are available on the table, with few flavor-changing condiments. A classic way to enjoy the meal is to add Aedama towards the end for a "double noodle" experience; the truffle-scented thin noodles can be enjoyed as a separate ramen dish on their own. Limited menus like the 100-hour curry collaboration often offer various "oimeshi" (extra rice) options like cheese rice. After finishing, lift your bowl and quietly exit.
