1Before entering

5-minute walk from Yabacho Station on the Meijo Subway Line. Located at the southern end of the Sakae area. Open weekdays from 11:00-15:00 and 17:30-22:00, and weekends from 11:00-15:00 and 17:00-23:00, with a break from 15:00 until the evening service. Lunchtime always sees queues, with waits sometimes reaching 30 minutes during peak times, so it's safer to line up a few minutes before the 11:00 opening. If you want to avoid peak times, after 13:00 or early in the evening service are relatively less crowded. Staff will distribute menus while you are waiting, so decide on your order during that time.

2Ordering and payment

There is no meal ticket machine; orders are taken orally at your seat, and payment is made after eating. The signature dish is HACHIKU (淡竹, 930 yen, light soy sauce with shellfish broth), which is highly recommended for first-time visitors. Variants include KUROCHIKU (黒竹, koime (rich)), MADAKE (真竹, intermediate), and Shellfish Salt Ramen. Side dishes include the deluxe HACHIKU Special (淡竹スペシャル, 1,400 yen, all toppings), a soft-boiled egg topping (120 yen), a rare chashu rice bowl set, and a 5-piece chicken gyoza set during lunchtime. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted.

3Seating and serving

There are 20 seats in total: 8 counter seats and 12 table seats. A highlight is the freshly cut chashu served directly over the counter. Serving time is approximately 5-10 minutes.

4Other

The homemade medium-thick whole wheat noodles have a strong aroma and pair perfectly with the soup. The long, thick hozaki menma (bamboo shoots) are also a specialty of this shop. While it might taste a little light to those in Nagoya who prefer a koime (rich) flavor, the best way to enjoy it is to savor the pure umami of the shellfish broth. There is a possibility of irregular closures, such as during New Year's, so it's advisable to check the official Instagram for business days before visiting.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.
