Menya Somies
麺屋 Somie's
Overview
Opened in 2013 by a former vintage clothing store owner, this is a super popular ramen shop in Ekimae-cho, Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture. The shop's name, Somie's, is an Americanized version of the owner's wife's name, Sonmi. Its unique charm lies in the contrast between its appearance and interior BGM (hard rock from bands like Guns N' Roses and Aerosmith) which resemble a rock band's live house, and its meticulous dedication to ramen making. It won the top prize at the Kansai Ramen Grand Prix 2024 and has been selected multiple times for Tabelog's Hyakumeiten (Top 100 Restaurants), proving its skill. The signature dishes feature a soup free of chemical seasonings and yeast extract, and homemade "Ittan-men" (meaning "one-tan noodle"), which are hand-kneaded natural wavy noodles. These wide, flat noodles, made with sticky mochi wheat, offer a unique, addictive texture: a satisfying 'gum-like' bounce when chewed, carrying the soup and dancing in your mouth. The signature Jidori Gyokai Shio Ramen (chicken and seafood salt ramen) and Shoyu Ramen (soy sauce ramen) have a profound depth, created by the rich flavor of jidori chicken and bonito-based seafood broth layered like a duet, astonishingly thick for a soup without chemical seasonings. The ramen is luxuriously topped with four types of char siu (grilled, rare, kamado charcoal-grilled, and smoked chicken breast), allowing diners to enjoy the differences in texture and smoky aroma. Limited-time menus such as "Somiso" (Shinshu miso x jidori chicken, pork bone, and seafood triple soup), "Paitan to Niboshi" (creamy chicken broth style), and "Dai Komu-chan" (ultimate tsukemen) frequently appear, making this a famous shop known nationwide for drawing ramen fans on four-hour one-way journeys.
How to Order
(Check the official account below in advance for irregular closures and updates)

1Before entering
Located a 4-5 minute walk from JR Fukuchiyama Station. Open only for a short lunch period from 11:00-13:45 on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. As opening hours may be irregular, it is recommended to check their official X (@menya_somies) before visiting. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, there is a unique registration system: write your name on the registration board at the storefront 1-1.5 hours before opening, spend time nearby, return 10 minutes before opening to purchase meal tickets, then enter. During Golden Week and other long holidays, arriving at 10:30 often means 7-9 customers are already ahead, and limited menus may sell out quickly. As each bowl is carefully prepared, it may take over 30 minutes to be served; a notice advises allowing ample time for your visit.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering
Purchase meal tickets from the vending machine at the entrance. Cash only, no English descriptions or photos. The signature dishes are Jidori Gyokai Shio Ramen for 1,450 yen and Jidori Gyokai Shoyu Ramen for 1,450 yen. A notice recommends salt or soy sauce ramen for first-time visitors. Toppings include an extra slice of rare char siu, ajitama (seasoned egg), and rice dishes. Limited menus (Somiso, Paitan to Niboshi, Tsukemen, etc.) should be decided based on their appearance on the vending machine at the time of visit. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, meal tickets are purchased according to the registration order, and staff will guide customers on the timing of registration and purchase.
3Seating and receiving your order
Staff will guide you to one of 10 counter seats, or one indoor 2-person table or one 4-person table. As each dish is prepared carefully, serving time can vary from 10-30 minutes after seating. During busy periods, it may take even longer, so allow plenty of time for your visit.
4Other information
Enjoying the four types of char siu (grilled, rare, kamado charcoal-grilled, smoked chicken breast) by comparing their textures and smoky aromas is a highlight. The inability to order a large size (oomori) is said to be the owner's "love call" to encourage repeat visits. The in-store BGM is mainly hard rock, and sometimes the music starts simultaneously with the start of service. Parking: On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, use the gravel parking lot diagonally across from the store (park in a line). On weekdays, use the municipal parking lot at Fukuchiyama Station North Exit Rotary (1 hour free).

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen
Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.

Ramen Jiro "Kabuji" (Shinjuku-Kabukicho): The Complete Guide to Jiro Calls and Timing
Just a 1-minute walk from Seibu-Shinjuku Station North Exit, Ramen Jiro Shinjuku-Kabukicho, affectionately known as Kabuji (a nickname combining Kabukicho + Jiro), is the fourth oldest chokkei (direct-lineage) shop of the Ramen Jiro chain. Its late-night hours from 11:30 AM to 2:30 AM (Mon, Tue, Thu-Sun, closed Wed) are a unique advantage among chokkei shops, making it ideal for combining with Kabukicho sightseeing or as a late-night ramen after drinks. With its semi-emulsified pork-bone shoyu broth, homemade flat thick wavy noodles, unique call (shouted topping order ritual) culture (Ninniku (raw grated garlic), Yasai (boiled bean sprouts on top), Abura (solid back fat for richness), Karame (extra soy tare for stronger salty taste), Mashi (more, about 1.5×), Sukuname (less, about half)), the chokkei system of ticket-folding (a wordless system to request firmer or softer noodles by folding the meal ticket) to specify noodle hardness, lot system (a Jiro-specific eating rhythm where the same batch of customers finish together) manners, and specific rules (no phone calls, no photography except ramen, no drunken entry), this article provides a complete guide based on our visit on May 15, 2026, where we ordered a Small Ramen (¥950) with the call 'Ninniku Sukuname, Yasai, Abura'.
