Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya
味噌麺処 田坂屋
Overview
Misomen Dokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro) is a TabeLog Hyakumeiten (one of the top 100 restaurants) miso ramen specialty shop located on the 1st floor of Felice Nishi-Ikebukuro, about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station West Exit. Their signature dish is a 'hearty' bowl reminiscent of the voluminous 'Ramen Jiro' style, featuring a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso soup, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu pork, and a mountain of crispy bean sprouts. The menu is broadly divided into four series: the basic 'Miso Ramen', 'Spicy Miso Ramen' with chili peppers, 'Aemen' (soupless mixed noodles), and the spiciest 'IWGP Gekikara Ramen' (named after the novel and drama 'Ikebukuro West Gate Park', set in Nishi-Ikebukuro). Deluxe versions with additional seasoned egg or chashu, and 'Mini' sizes with reduced portions are also available for each series. Enjoy the rich miso and generous volume while customizing the flavor with chopped garlic and chili available at your table. It's a highly regarded shop perfect for a stop during sightseeing or shopping in Ikebukuro.
How to Order
(Check the official account below in advance for irregular closures and updates)

1Before entering
It's about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station West Exit, and the shortest route is to exit from underground passage 'Exit 1a'. They are open continuously from 11:00 to 21:00. There are only 9 counter seats, and the noodles take a long time to cook, so turnover is not very fast. During dinner hours, queues tend to extend outside; for example, on one Friday night, arriving at 18:39 meant a 13-person wait and about 30 minutes to enter. To minimize waiting, it's relatively easier to get in right after opening at 11:00 AM, or during the lull between lunch and dinner peaks, around 14:00 to 17:00. Business days can change, so checking their official Instagram in advance is recommended.
2Purchasing tickets and ordering
When the shop is full, the system is to 'queue without buying a ticket and wait for staff guidance'. Upon arrival, don't look for the ticket machine; just join the end of the line. While waiting, staff will ask for the number of people, which you can convey by holding up fingers. Once guided, proceed to the ticket machine inside the shop to purchase your meal ticket. The ticket machine uses physical buttons, is in Japanese only, has no pictures, and no English guidance, but the buttons are color-coded by flavor series: white/grey = Miso, orange = Spicy Miso, yellow = Aemen, purple = IWGP Gekikara. Payment is cash only; credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted. Hand your purchased ticket to the kitchen staff or place it on the counter as instructed.
3Seating and receiving
There are only 9 counter seats. Water is self-service, with a dispenser behind the seats. Paper aprons are also available. The shop is small, so entering with large suitcases is difficult; if you have a lot of luggage, it's more comfortable to leave it in a station coin locker before visiting. Serving takes a few minutes to about 10 minutes.
4Other
The signature dish is 'Miso Ramen' for 980 yen. If you want a more substantial meal, 'Chashu Miso Ramen' for 1,280 yen plus 'Extra Bean Sprouts' for 150 yen, or 'Ajitama Chashu Miso Ramen' for 1,380 yen if you also add a seasoned egg. The condiments on the table are simple: chopped garlic, chili pepper, and pepper; it's common to add them gradually in the latter half to change the flavor. The soup is rich and the chashu pork is rather fatty, so those who prefer lighter dishes might find it too heavy.
