Mutekiya
無敵家
Overview
Located a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station East Exit and 1 minute from Seibu Ikebukuro Line South Exit, this iconic Tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen shop in Ikebukuro was founded in 1998. It's a popular spot with a particularly high ratio of international visitors, well-prepared to cater to overseas guests with multi-language descriptions on its nori (seaweed). The soup is a rich Tonkotsu base, creamy with a clean aftertaste, offering a mellow finish that is rich but not too heavy. The noodles are thick and slightly wavy with a chewy texture that intertwines well with the soup. A welcome point is that regular (210g) and large (320g) noodle portions are offered at the same price, allowing you to choose without worrying about the quantity. The greatest feature is the tasting comparison of three types of Chashu (pork slices). The shop's unique approach presents chashu from the same base prepared in three distinct ways: "as is", "aburi" (seared), and "yuzukosho" (yuzu pepper). The chashu is soft and melts in your mouth, with the rich umami of pork spreading with every bite. The nori features multi-language explanations, and the staff are energetic and proficient in English. The signature Mutekiya Ramen Nikutama (1530 yen) is a bowl topped with chashu and ajitama (marinated egg). For those seeking a challenge, the "1 Pound Dokamori Chashu Ramen" (2250 yen) is a voluminous bowl featuring 12 thick slices of chashu. Table condiments include concentrated Jasmine Tea (a free service that can be diluted with cold water), Karashi Takana (spicy pickled mustard greens), Gyofun (fish powder), and Oi-Kaeshi (extra concentrated soup base), offering a high degree of freedom to customize your flavor. With continuous operation until 3:30 AM, it's also a perfect spot for "shime ramen" (a late-night meal to finish the day) after the last train in Ikebukuro.
How to Order
1Before entering
A famous shop located on the 1st floor of Sakimoto Building, 5 minutes walk from Ikebukuro Station East Exit, and 1 minute from Seibu Ikebukuro Line South Exit. Founded in 1998, it's a representative tonkotsu ramen shop in Ikebukuro. During peak hours like Saturdays, there are instances of waiting for an hour. Weekdays around 3 PM or late at night (open continuously until 3:30 AM) are relatively easier times to enter. The proportion of international visitors is particularly high, and the nori (seaweed) has multilingual descriptions.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering
There is a ticket vending machine at the entrance inside the shop. When it's crowded and customers are lining up outside, staff may also bring menus and take verbal orders from those in line. When it's not crowded, simply enter, buy a ticket, and take a seat. Signature dishes include Mutekiya Ramen Nikutama 1530 yen, Honmaru-X 1100 yen, Chashu-men 1500 yen, 1 Pound Dokamori Chashu Ramen 2250 yen, Tsukemen, etc. Noodle portions (namimori (regular, 210g) and omori (large size, 320g)) are the same price. You can choose between the regular Honmaru soup or Honmaru-X with extra back fat. Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR payments are not accepted.
3Seating and receiving
There are only 17 counter seats, and staff will guide you to a seat. Serving usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. The shop is small, so it's recommended to eat quickly and leave without lingering.
4Other
On the table, you'll find karashi takana (spicy pickled mustard greens), fish powder, "kaeshi" (sauce to thicken the flavor), and strong jasmine tea (a free service that can be diluted with water). The chashu (braised pork) has a unique configuration, prepared in three variations from the same base: "as is," "torched," and "with yuzu kosho (citrus chili paste)," allowing you to enjoy different flavors. It's common to add fish powder or karashi takana later to change the flavor. Staff are energetic and proficient in English, and services like paper aprons are also well-provided.
