Nadai Ramentei Hakata Station Chikagai
名代ラーメン亭 博多駅地下街店
Overview
This long-established Hakata Tonkotsu ramen shop, founded in 1967 (Showa 42), is located in the Hakata Station underground mall in Fukuoka. It's a famous establishment at Hakata Station, having appeared in "Cooking Papa" by Hakata-born manga artist Tochi Ueyama and the novel "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas." Their signature ramen, starting from 600 yen, features thin straight noodles and a traditional rich Hakata Tonkotsu soup. You can customize the noodle firmness, and "kaedama" (extra noodles) are available for 150 yen. The tables are equipped with condiments like spicy takana (mustard greens), red pickled ginger, the shop's unique sour garlic paste, white sesame seeds, and original tare (sauce), allowing you to customize your flavor to your liking. Value for money is also a draw, with a Morning Chashu-men available for 580 yen from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. The menu is extensive, including Champon, Sara Udon, and mini fried rice sets, catering to meals from breakfast to dinner for those using Hakata Station. While photo menus on the wall make it easy for first-time visitors to choose, English menus are not available.
How to Order
1Before Entering
It is located near Exit 6 of Chikagai (underground shopping mall) at Hakata Station, directly connected to JR Hakata Station. Open from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, no holidays. Founded in 1967 (Showa 42), it is a long-established restaurant and a landmark in the Hakata Station underground mall. On weekdays, there are times around noon when queues can exceed 15 people, but it's relatively less crowded during the afternoon off-peak hours and in the evening. From 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, you can get Chashu-men for 580 yen with the morning service, making it recommended for breakfast.
2Ordering
There is no ticket machine; orders are taken orally by staff after you are shown to your seat. There are no menus on the tables; they are posted on the wall with photos, so it's smoother if you quickly check and decide upon entering. Popular items include "Ramen" (from 600 yen) and "Ramen Set" (720-790 yen, Ramen + mini fried rice), "Morning Chashu-men" (580 yen, limited to 9:00-10:30 AM), and side dishes like gyoza and half-fried rice. Noodle firmness can be specified orally when ordering from "barikata (very firm) / kata (firm) / futsu (regular) / yawa (soft)"; if not specified, it will be served closer to "futsu (regular)". Payment can be made with cash, transportation e-money, and QR payments like PayPay, Rakuten Pay, and au PAY; credit cards are not accepted.
3Seating and Receiving Your Order
Seating consists of an L-shaped counter with 5 seats and 4 tables for four people each (total 30 seats). All seats are round stools, characteristic of a Showa-era diner. Service is fast, typically 2-5 minutes, with an operation focused on quick turnover.
4Other Information
On the table, you'll find their unique "ninniku peesuto (garlic paste)", spicy takana, red ginger, white sesame, and original sauce. Their signature tonkotsu ramen is a rich, umami type with an initial sweetness; locals typically enjoy it first with white sesame and red ginger, then add ninniku peesuto (garlic paste) and spicy takana later to change the flavor. Kaedama (extra noodle) can be added as a separate order.
