Nagahama Number One Gion
長浜ナンバーワン 祇園店
Overview
The 'Nagahama Number One' group is a long-established company that started from a food stall in Nagahama, Hakata Ward in 1971, and has preserved the tradition of Nagahama Ramen for over half a century. This Gion branch, serving as the group's main store, is loved by both tourists and locals alike, with easy access just a 2-minute walk from Gion Subway Station. The signature 'Ramen' is the quintessential style of Nagahama Ramen, a representative of Hakata Tonkotsu. The cloudy tonkotsu (pork bone) soup is not as heavy as it looks, characterized by a sharpness typical of Nagahama and a rich pork bone flavor, all culminating in a mild finish free of any strong odor. The noodles are thin and straight, and you can specify their firmness when ordering from 'futsu' (regular), 'kata' (firm), or 'barikata' (very firm). In addition to the signature ramen, there's a wide selection based on the classic Nagahama Ramen style, including Boiled Egg Ramen, Takana (pickled mustard greens) Ramen, Chashu (roast pork) Ramen, a Special Ramen that combines chashu, kikurage (wood ear mushrooms), wontons, seasoned egg, and takana in one bowl, and seasonal or special event Spicy Meat Miso Ramen. Side dishes like gyoza (dumplings), mentaiko gohan (spicy cod roe rice), and lunch sets (4 gyoza, half rice, spicy takana) offer great value for a satisfying lunch. The Hakata Tonkotsu way is to adjust the flavor to your liking with the red pickled ginger, sesame, pepper, and grated garlic available at your table, and then enjoy a 'kaedama' (noodle refill) for 150 yen to finish. With continuous operation until 11 PM (10 PM on Sundays), it's convenient for a late-night meal to round off a business trip in Fukuoka or to satisfy a small appetite while sightseeing.
How to Order
1Before entering
2 minutes walk from Gion Station on the Subway Kuko Line, on the 1st floor of New Wing Building Gion. The sign is clear and easy to find even for first-timers. Open continuously from 11:30 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday, and 11:30 to 22:00 on Sundays. There are three busy periods: lunch peak (12-13:00), dinner, and late-night ramen. On weekdays, daytime, evening, and late-night (around 23:00) often have smooth entry, but on weekend nights around 21:00, it can be full, and there might be an outdoor wait of about 10 minutes.
2Ordering and Payment
There is no ticket vending machine inside the shop; orders are placed verbally after being seated at the counter. The menu centers around the signature "Ramen," including Boiled Egg Ramen, Takana Ramen, Chashu-men, the generously topped Special Ramen, and lunch sets. When ordering, state your desired noodle firmness from "futsu (regular) / kata (firm) / barikata (very firm)". Kaedama (150 yen, extra noodle) is the basic Hakata Tonkotsu flow, where you verbally add it during your meal. Payment is accepted via cash and QR code, but credit cards and e-money are not accepted.
3Seating and Receiving
There are only 18 counter seats. Staff will guide you to an available seat. Orders are served quickly, typically within 3-5 minutes, ensuring fast turnover.
4Other
On the table, you'll find beni shoga (red pickled ginger), sesame, pepper, and grated ninniku (garlic). Adding beni shoga or ninniku halfway through enhances the soup's profile, a classic way to enjoy Hakata Tonkotsu. The generously topped Special Ramen is a luxurious version that allows for multiple flavor changes in one bowl. For a late-night meal, pairing gyoza and beer is also a classic way to finish the night.
