Nagaoka Shokudo Yokohama Nishiguchi
長岡食堂 横浜西口店
Overview
Nagaoka Shokudo Yokohama Nishiguchi is a specialty restaurant for ginger soy sauce ramen, originating from Nagaoka, Niigata. It is prominently located by the river, next to Hamabowl Eas, just a 3-minute walk from Yokohama Station West Exit. The calm, wood-toned interior has about 20 seats, including counter and table seating. Their signature dish is a rich soy sauce soup, made from a blend of pork bones, back fat, and chicken bones, generously flavored with ginger. The soy sauce flavor is distinct, yet the overall taste is mellow. The sweetness and ginger intertwine, creating a surprisingly rich bowl. The medium-thick flat wavy noodles have a chewy texture and pick up the soup well. Toppings include pork shoulder chashu, shredded menma, spinach, naruto, and nori. A classic way to enjoy it is by adding 'oishouga' (extra ginger) from the grated ginger on the table to change the flavor towards the end. You can choose between soy sauce or salt base. The restaurant is operated by Gift Holdings (which also runs iekei-style Machida Shoten and Jiro-style Butayama, among others), and this Nagaoka Shokudo is their first branch. They also have locations at Tokyo Ramen Street and Haneda Airport.
How to Order
1Before Entering
Located by the river next to Hamabowl Eas, a 3-minute walk from Yokohama Station West Exit, with a bright and prominent exterior. There can be queues during lunchtime and on weekend evenings; even on weekday lunch, waits can be 5-10 minutes, and on Saturday evenings, it can exceed 20 minutes.
2Purchasing Meal Tickets and Ordering
Use the touch-panel ticket vending machine, where buttons are in Japanese only and without photos. First, select 'Shoyu' (soy sauce) or 'Shio' (salt), then add toppings such as Ajitama (seasoned egg), Chashu (roast pork), or Oomori (large portion, +100 yen). The process is to buy a ticket first, then join the queue. Payment can be made with cash and transportation IC cards (like Suica), but credit cards and QR code payments are not accepted.
3Seating and Receiving
There are about 20 seats, including counter and table seating. Hand your meal ticket to the staff and wait. Service is quick.
4Other
Grated ginger (kizami shoga) is available on the table. Adding 'oishouga' (extra ginger) towards the end significantly enhances the flavor. The rich ginger soy sauce soup pairs well with the medium-thick flat wavy noodles.
