Ramen Kaminari Tokyo Honmaru
ラーメン 雷 東京本丸店
Overview
Ramen Kaminari Tokyo Honmaru is a Jiro-kei inspired ramen shop directly operated by the super famous Chukasoba Tomita in Matsudo, Chiba. It is located on the 1st floor of Gransta Tokyo, near the Marunouchi North Exit inside JR Tokyo Station. The main shop is in Kita-Matsudo, and the Tokyo Honmaru branch, which opened in 2022, is a flagship store within the station. Inheriting Tomita's overwhelmingly rich and concentrated pork umami emulsified soup, combined with the unique touch of owner Haru Tomita (from the Menya Kouji Group, which originated from Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken), it has gained high popularity as a valuable hearty meal option within the station, positioning itself on a unique path closer to the Higashi-Ikebukuro style rather than a pure Jiro-kei. The signature "Kaminari Soba" (regular 250g for 1,100 yen / medium 300g / mini 150g) is a rich bowl featuring an emulsified pork bone-based soup with a sweet and sour tare (sauce) reminiscent of Higashi-Ikebukuro Taishoken. It is topped with a moderate amount of back fat, vegetables (bean sprouts + cabbage), fried garlic, and thick, wavy noodles that are neither too chewy nor too soft. A unique feature is the choice of two types of chashu: "Ude" (pork shoulder) and "Bara" (pork belly). Ude offers a firm, meaty texture, while Bara is melt-in-your-mouth tender, providing contrasting flavors. If you want both, you need to purchase an extra portion, but many regulars recommend the "W Buta" (double pork). "Kaminari Soba Ponzu" is a lighter variation where the rich soup is balanced with the citrusy acidity of yuzu ponzu. Combining it with the aokosho (green chili) topping adds a sharp spiciness and refreshing kick, making it a popular arrangement. Sub-menus include "Tsukemen" (regular 200g / medium 300g / medium + toro-buta), "Shirunashi Soba" (a mazesoba-style without pork bone soup, served with a raw egg), and "Shirunashi Mazesoba (Chiiyu Soba)", offering various options that extend from the Jiro-kei style. The shop opens early at 8 AM, making it a rare presence in the station that caters to the demand for "asa-ra" (morning ramen).
How to Order
1Before entering the shop
Located on the 1st floor of Gransta Tokyo, near the Marunouchi North Exit, inside JR Tokyo Station. Access is only possible for Shinkansen/JR users as it is located inside the ticket gates. Opening hours are 8:00-22:00 from Monday to Saturday and the day before a public holiday, and 8:00-21:00 on Sundays and public holidays, offering early morning service and long operating hours. It's relatively easier to get in during earlier times around 9-10 AM and late at night. During weekday lunch peaks and Saturday evenings, expect queues of 20-30 people, meaning a wait of 30-40 minutes outside. Due to the shop's characteristics, the queue operation is well-managed, and staff will ask for your "Call" (garlic, vegetables, richness) and chashu selection while you are queuing.
2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering
There is a touch-panel ticket vending machine at the front of the shop. It has photos and English notation. You'll find the signature "Kaminari Soba" (regular 250g / medium 300g / mini 150g), "Kaminari Soba Ponzu", "Tsukemen", "Shirunashi Soba", "Shirunashi Mazesoba", and toppings such as "Toro-Buta", "Raw Egg", "Quail Eggs", "Yasai" (YASAI, vegetables; free up to "choi-mashi" - slightly increased), and "Abura" (ABURA, back fat; chargeable). Advance purchase: Purchase your meal ticket at the vending machine before joining the end of the queue. The "Call" (Ninniku - NINNIku, garlic; Yasai - YASAI, vegetables; Karame - KARAME, richness) and chashu selection (Ude - UDE, pork shoulder / Bara - BARA, pork belly) will be asked by staff when you are queuing after purchasing your meal ticket, so it's smoother if you decide beforehand. Payment is only accepted in cash and transportation IC cards (Suica/PASMO, etc.); credit cards or QR code payments are not available.
3Seating and receiving your order
The counter has 11 L-shaped seats, including corner seats, and staff will guide you in sequence. You will receive a paper apron upon entry. It takes about 5-10 minutes for your order to be served, and multiple orders are served simultaneously in batches.
4Others
The items that can be customized with a "Call" are as follows: "Ninniku" (NINNIku, garlic; yes or no, amount can also be specified), "Yasai" (YASAI, vegetables; normal / choi-mashi - slightly increased / mashi - increased / mashi-mashi - greatly increased, free up to choi-mashi), "Karame" (KARAME, richness; additional soy sauce tare), "Abura" (ABURA, back fat; additional back fat, chargeable), "Chashu" (choice of Ude - UDE, pork shoulder / Bara - BARA, pork belly; if you want both, purchase an additional portion). Back fat, chopped garlic, chili pepper, and other condiments are also available on the table. "Shirunashi Soba" comes with a raw egg, and it is recommended to break it into a small bowl and dip the noodles in it.
