Ramen Kyoto Tengu Tokiwa
ラーメン京都てんぐ 常盤店
Overview
A Kyoto ramen shop in Tokiwa, Kyoto, long beloved by locals. The owner, who trained at "Ramen Sugichiyo," one of Kyoto's most renowned ramen shops that sadly closed in 2009, opened this restaurant in 2002, inheriting Sugichiyo's legacy. The soup is a Kyoto ramen-style soy sauce base, combining chicken and pork with Japanese dashi, featuring a layer of oil on the surface and a subtle hint of spiciness. Despite its rich appearance, the aftertaste is not heavy, making it a perfect accompaniment for rice. The specialty is the melt-in-your-mouth chashu, inherited from Sugichiyo. Its sweet fat and tender texture give it a leading role in the ramen. Green onions are served separately in a basket, allowing you to add as much as you like. Rice refills are free, making you want to enjoy countless bowls with the soup. They also offer salt ramen, miso ramen, tantanmen, and seasonal limited-time menus, with popular side dishes like meat shumai and shrimp shumai. Open until late at night, it's convenient for dinner or a late-night meal after work.
How to Order
1Before Entering
Located along the street, about a 3-minute walk from Tokiwa Station on the Keifuku Electric Railroad (Randen) Kitano Line. Look for the exterior that resembles a traditional ramen shop. In addition to counter seats, there are also table seats and raised tatami areas, making it easy for families to use. Open until 2 AM, so it's convenient for late-night visits.
2Ordering
There is no ticket machine; you will be seated, review the menu, and order verbally. In addition to the signature Tengu Ramen, salt, miso, tantanmen, and seasonal limited-time menus are available. Rice refills are free, so if you want to enjoy it with rice, please mention it when ordering. Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
3Seating and Receiving Your Order
A staff member will guide you to your seat. After ordering, green onions will first be brought to your table in a basket, so add as much as you like to your ramen. The estimated waiting time is about 10 minutes.
4Other
Ichimi togarashi (Japanese chili powder), pepper, and grated garlic are available on the table. Adding garlic or pepper midway will transform the flavor, making it even more appealing with rice. Rice is self-service for refills, and mixing it with the leftover soup is a classic way to enjoy it. There is no English menu, so it's advisable to decide what to order beforehand for a smooth process.
