Notes
Outdoor seating is weather/cold dependent, mandatory 1 ramen per person house rule, Kaedama (extra noodle) not available.

1Before entering

This is a standing-only Chukasoba (Chinese-style ramen) shop located at the entrance of Asakusa Hisago-dori Shopping Street, a short walk from Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Asakusa Station. It has an open design with no doors facing the arcade, and four outdoor tables for two people each are placed in front of the shop. Business starts at 9 AM (morning ramen available). On weekday afternoons and weekend lunchtimes, the shop may be full or have a few groups waiting, but food is served and turnover is extremely fast, so waiting times are short. Since there are outdoor seats, it can be affected by the weather.

2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering

There is a ticket vending machine outside (outdoors). Purchase a meal ticket at the vending machine before entering the shop. A house rule states, "One ramen order per person is mandatory," and using only side dishes is not allowed. The main menu items are Ramen for 400 yen, Nitamago Ramen (Soft-boiled egg ramen) for 520 yen, Ajitama Ramen (Seasoned egg ramen) for 520 yen, Chashu-men (Roast pork ramen) for 600 yen, Omori (large size) +120 yen, Menma topping for 150 yen, and Gyoza (dumplings) for 300 yen. Noodle hardness can be specified, but Kaedama (extra noodle) is not available. Payment is cash only at the ticket vending machine.

3Seating and receiving your order

Place your meal ticket at the ticket holder on the kitchen counter inside the shop. Your name will be called in about 2 minutes, and you will self-receive your ramen at the pickup counter. Water is also self-served, making it a complete self-service system. You can sit at one of the 8 indoor counter seats or the 4 outdoor tables. Outdoor 4-person tables may require sharing, so customers who dislike sharing may prefer the indoor counter seats for safety. After eating, wipe your table with a duster and return your bowl to the pickup counter.

4Other

The soup is a traditional chicken bone-based soy sauce, light yet with a rich umami from fat, in the style of Showa-era Chukasoba. The noodles are straight, extra-thin, and their hardness can be specified. It's best to eat them quickly as they tend to get soft if not eaten fast. Ingredients include two thin slices of chashu, bean sprouts, menma, nori (seaweed), and chopped green onions, which is a substantial offering for the 400 yen price. You can also customize the flavor with pepper, chili oil, vinegar, and gyoza sauce available on the table. It's a unique style that embraces standing-only culture and self-service, a rare find that maintains extreme cost-performance amidst recent price increases.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.

Ramen Jiro "Kabuji" (Shinjuku-Kabukicho): The Complete Guide to Jiro Calls and Timing

Just a 1-minute walk from Seibu-Shinjuku Station North Exit, Ramen Jiro Shinjuku-Kabukicho, affectionately known as Kabuji (a nickname combining Kabukicho + Jiro), is the fourth oldest chokkei (direct-lineage) shop of the Ramen Jiro chain. Its late-night hours from 11:30 AM to 2:30 AM (Mon, Tue, Thu-Sun, closed Wed) are a unique advantage among chokkei shops, making it ideal for combining with Kabukicho sightseeing or as a late-night ramen after drinks. With its semi-emulsified pork-bone shoyu broth, homemade flat thick wavy noodles, unique call (shouted topping order ritual) culture (Ninniku (raw grated garlic), Yasai (boiled bean sprouts on top), Abura (solid back fat for richness), Karame (extra soy tare for stronger salty taste), Mashi (more, about 1.5×), Sukuname (less, about half)), the chokkei system of ticket-folding (a wordless system to request firmer or softer noodles by folding the meal ticket) to specify noodle hardness, lot system (a Jiro-specific eating rhythm where the same batch of customers finish together) manners, and specific rules (no phone calls, no photography except ramen, no drunken entry), this article provides a complete guide based on our visit on May 15, 2026, where we ordered a Small Ramen (¥950) with the call 'Ninniku Sukuname, Yasai, Abura'.
