Notes
No parking, cash only, expect 10-30 minute queues during weekday lunch peak and weekends.

1Before entering

A long-established Kyoto Tonkotsu Shoyu "Akira-kei" ramen shop with over 40 years of history, located a 15-minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Line's Matsuo Taisha Station, or two bus stops away. There is no dedicated parking, so please use nearby coin-operated parking lots if coming by car. On weekdays after 12:00 PM, a wait of 10-30 minutes with several people lining up outside is common, while after 1:00 PM, it's often possible to enter without a wait. Even after 6:00 PM on Sundays, there can be a 5-15 minute wait, so aiming for off-peak hours is safer. Arriving around 10:55 AM might already find about 4 people waiting, indicating it's a popular shop where queues are inevitable.

2Ordering

There is no ticket machine; meal tickets are not used. Staff will guide you to an available seat, and you order verbally after sitting at the counter. Payment is made on the spot to the staff in advance, and only cash is accepted. Credit cards, QR code payments, and electronic money are not supported. The main menu features two types: Shoyu Ramen and Miso Ramen, with choices of regular or large size, firm noodles (katame) preference, extra chashu, extra bean sprouts, Tsukidashi Chashu (a popular appetizer served with rice first), small rice, regular rice, Chashu Don (rice bowl with chashu), and takeout options (chashu only, or ramen).

3Seating and Receiving

The interior has counter seats only, and water is self-service. The operation is a family system with a father, mother, and son. If you order Tsukidashi Chashu and small rice, the chashu (with shoyu ramen tare poured over it at the end of plating) and small rice are served first. The timing is exquisite, with the ramen arriving just as you finish eating them.

4Other

The signature Shoyu Ramen features a slightly transparent tonkotsu shoyu broth with the sweetness and umami of fat melted from specially selected Miyazaki pork chashu, achieving an exquisite balance of richness and sharpness. The noodles are from "Kondo Seimen," a long-established Kyoto noodle maker, and are straight, smooth, medium-thick to medium-thin, with a chewy texture that blends well with the soup. Standard toppings include melt-in-your-mouth soft sliced chashu, Kujo green onions, and plenty of bean sprouts hidden beneath the green onions. Miso Ramen is also popular; its chashu is well-seasoned with salt, pairing well with rice. It's common to see neighboring customers ordering Chashu Don or takeout. Karashi Miso (mustard miso) for flavor adjustment is available on the table; adding a small amount at the end offers a nostalgic flavor. The price for a large Shoyu Ramen + extra chashu is around 1350 yen, beloved by both local and out-of-prefecture customers.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.
