1Before entering

A specialty store for Sichuan Tantanmen located directly next to Tawaramachi Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, at Casa Tawaramachi 1F, 1-1-13 Nishi-Asakusa. This is the second branch following the main store in Yushima, opened in 2015. Operations are close to continuous service; queues often form during weekday lunch peaks and on weekends, but you might be able to enter without waiting during off-peak hours such as around 2 PM on weekdays or 6 PM on Sundays. The shop has a small number of counter seats only, so turnover is relatively fast.

2Purchasing meal tickets and ordering

There is a ticket vending machine at the shop entrance. Purchase your meal ticket from the vending machine before proceeding to your seat. The signature dishes are two types of Tantanmen: White Sesame Tantanmen and Black Sesame Tantanmen. Each comes in a "with soup" (thin noodles) and "soup-less" (medium-thick noodles) option, offering a total of four patterns to choose from. Seasonal menus such as Miso Tantanmen (winter limited) and Hiyashi Tantanmen (chilled Tantanmen, summer) are also available. When handing your meal ticket to the staff, you verbally specify the spiciness (ra-yu chili oil) and numbingness (sansho peppercorn) in 7 levels from 0 to 6. The shop's recommendation is Spiciness 3 and Numbingness 2. Payment is cash only at the vending machine.

3Seating and receiving your order

There are a small number of counter seats, fewer than 10, and staff will guide you to an available seat. It takes about 5-10 minutes for the order to be served. Paper aprons are provided on the table, and wearing them is recommended as a splash guard when mixing the soup-less Tantanmen. When serving, staff will tell you "Please mix well before eating," so after your bowl is served, it is customary to mix it thoroughly for about 1 minute before starting to eat.

4Other

The signature Tantanmen are each 1200 yen. Side dishes include free small rice (service), soft-boiled egg and half rice set for 250 yen, barley rice, mapo tofu bowl, paiko (fried pork cutlet) for 400 yen, ajitama (seasoned egg) for 120 yen, cilantro topping, Gekikara 6+ (extra spicy, exceeding standard Spiciness 6, +100 yen), and Omori (large size) (+200 yen). For the soup-less option, it is customary to add small rice to the remaining sauce and ingredients after finishing the noodles as a "shime" (finishing style); the rich flavor is also suitable for rice. White Sesame Tantanmen tends to be clear and its spiciness stands out, while Black Sesame Tantanmen tends to feel milder with richer koku (richness) and depth. Ingredients include minced meat, dried shrimp, nuts, mizuna (Japanese mustard greens), kaiware (daikon radish sprouts), and shredded spring onion, offering a rich variety of textures. If you have a shrimp allergy, it is safe to declare it before ordering.
