Shurai
集来
Overview
Shurai, a veteran Machichuka (neighborhood Chinese restaurant) with over 70 years of history in the Daimon/Hamamatsucho area, started as a ramen stall. Despite its inconspicuous location hidden between buildings, it's a popular spot with endless queues on weekday lunchtimes. Its specialty is handmade noodles. The extra-thick, wavy noodles, kneaded with each order, are uneven but boast a springy, strong chewiness, and the flavor of wheat spreads with every bite. While straight thin noodles are also an option, most customers choose the handmade noodles. Signature dishes include the Handmade Gomoku-men (five-ingredient noodles) and Tanmen, where a generous amount of vegetables completely covers the noodles. The light, gentle, subtly ginger-infused salted soup enhances the sweetness of the stir-fried vegetables, making it a hearty yet somehow body-friendly meal packed with vegetables. Gomoku Wonton-men, featuring generously filled wontons, and Niboshi Shoyu Chuka Soba (sardine-infused soy sauce ramen) are also popular. The poached egg topping adds a nostalgic touch. Run by a family – a father and mother in the kitchen and their daughter managing the front-of-house – their warm service is another reason for its long-standing popularity.
How to Order
1Before entering the restaurant
About a 2-minute walk from Daimon Station A3 Exit on the Toei Asakusa Line. Open only for weekday lunch (11:00 AM - 2:30 PM); closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. The entrance is at the far left of a building that houses a Yakiniku restaurant and is not facing the main street, making it hard to find, but queues are usually a reliable landmark during lunchtime. Queues of around 10 people are not uncommon on weekday lunchtimes, but service is quick.
2Ordering
There is no ticket vending machine. Decide your menu in advance and order verbally at the cash register. Payment is made after the meal. If there's a queue, a staff member will take your order while you wait as a seat is about to become available. Inform them whether you want handmade noodles or regular noodles, your chosen dish (such as Gomoku-men, Tanmen, or Wonton-men), and if you want extra vegetables. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
3Seating and receiving your order
There are 6 counter seats and 16 table seats. As the restaurant is run by a family of three, it may take some time for your order to be served. During busy times, you may be asked to share a table or move seats. Water is self-service.
4Other
Adding a small amount of the spicy sauce on the table midway through your meal will transform the gentle soup's flavor. The amount of vegetables is quite generous, so consider carefully if you want to order extra based on how much you can eat. Handmade noodles take longer to boil, but they offer a satisfying texture that is worth the wait.
