Tanmen Tonari Marunouchi
タンメン トナリ 丸の内店
Overview
Tanmen Tonari Marunouchi is a specialty tanmen shop located on B1F of Tokyo Building TOKIA, Tokyo Station, offering a cloudy white broth. It has earned a reputation comparable to Tabelog's Ramen Hyakumeiten (Top 100 Ramen Shops) and is highly popular among repeat customers, especially Marunouchi office workers, who say they "want to eat it once a week." It's a popular spot with a consistent wait of around 20 minutes, even amidst long queues at "Tsurutontan" across the street and the competitive ramen area in KITTE, just a 1-minute walk from Keiyo Line Tokyo Station, along the path to KITTE. Operating hours are 10:30-22:00 with continuous service, accommodating a wide range of needs from lunch to dinner and late-night meals. The signature "Tanmen" (840 yen) features a rich, cloudy white broth based on pork bones and chicken bones, enhanced with aromatic oil for a powerful flavor. It's combined with chewy, flat, medium-thick noodles and a generous mound of vegetables (mainly bean sprouts, cabbage, chives, and chili peppers). The 360g of vegetables are said to provide a full day's worth, and their crisp stir-fry is excellent. The portion is so generous that many middle-aged men choose "less noodles" (men-sukuname). The side menu is also extensive, with three major sets: "Tan-Gyo" (Tanmen + Gyoza set), "Tan-Kara" (Tanmen + Karaage set), and "Tan-Mabo" (Tanmen + Mapo Tofu bowl set), each offered at a reasonable price of 1,000-1,200 yen. Limited-time seasonal menus include "Miso Tanmen," "Shingeki Tanmen" (with spiciness levels 1-4), "Tan-Kara" (Triple Ginger + Karaage), "Reimen" (cold noodles), and "Miso Cheese." A unique feature is the "aj-hen order" (flavor change order) system. When ordering or while waiting in line, staff will ask, "Would you like ginger? / How much? (normal / double / triple)" (Shoga no ryo: futsu/double/triple), allowing you to choose the amount of ginger for free. Additionally, garlic is available on the counter; if you want it, you can ask for it to be added. Shingeki Tanmen offers spiciness levels 1-4, providing a unique experience where the combination of strong spiciness and pork bone broth is described as "getting into the zone" (totonou).
How to Order

1Before entering the shop
Located on B1F of Tokyo Building TOKIA, in the "Marunouchi Underground Restaurant Floor," a 1-minute walk from Tokyo Station's Keiyo Line ticket gate. During weekday lunch peak hours (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM), expect a queue of about 10 people and a wait of around 20 minutes. Off-peak hours after 2:00 PM on weekdays, after 7:00 PM in the evening, and right after opening on Saturdays (just after 10:30 AM) are relatively easier times to enter. Turnover is fast, and staff take orders while you are in line, ensuring a smooth process where your ramen arrives soon after you are seated. Closing time is 10:00 PM (L.O. 9:45 PM).
2Purchasing meal tickets / Ordering
There is no ticket machine; staff take orders sequentially in a face-to-face manner while you are in line. You can choose from the signature "Tanmen," "Miso Tanmen," "Shingeki Tanmen" (spiciness levels 1-4 available), set menus like "Tan-Gyo," "Tan-Kara," "Tan-Mabo," limited-time items like "Miso Cheese," "Reimen," and single fried items like "Geso-age" (fried squid tentacles) and "Ika-age" (fried squid). A unique customization feature is verbally telling the staff your preferences when ordering: "Would you like ginger? / How much? (normal / double / triple)" (Shoga no ryo: futsu/double/triple), "Noodle hardness / less noodles" (Men no katasa / men-sukuname), and "extra vegetables (+150 yen)" (Yasai oomori). Payment is post-pay at the counter before you leave the shop, accepted methods include cash, various credit cards (VISA/Master/JCB/AMEX/Diners/UnionPay), public transport IC cards, iD/QUICPay, and QR code payments like PayPay/d払い/Rakuten Pay/au PAY/Alipay/WeChat Pay.
3Seating / Receiving your order
The shop has 17 counter seats only, no table seats. The spacious counter allows business travelers and tourists with suitcases to eat comfortably side-by-side. Since orders are placed while waiting, the ramen often arrives very soon after being seated. The Tanmen itself takes about 10 minutes to prepare, and set items like gyoza and karaage are served simultaneously.
4Other
Garlic is available on the counter; if you want it, just say "Garlic, please" (Ninniku wo onegai shimasu) to the staff. It's common to customize the flavor mid-meal with table condiments like pepper, vinegar, and chili oil. Limited-time menus change monthly, so it's a good idea to check their official X (formerly Twitter) account (@tonari_tanmen) for announcements before visiting. If you're wearing white clothes, staff will thoughtfully provide a paper apron. Information on temporary closures is also announced on their official X.
