Tantanmen Yebisu Yamashina
担担麺 胡 山科本店
Overview
Tantanmen Ebisu Yamashina Honten is a specialty tantanmen restaurant located along Sanjo-dori, about a 5-minute walk from JR, Keihan, and subway Yamashina Station. The name "胡" is read "Ebisu". It is a popular restaurant known for the queues often seen in front of it, and its signature dish is a creamy and rich sesame-based soup. Instead of emphasizing spiciness or numbness, the soup features the rich flavor and umami of sesame, making it easy to drink. A major characteristic is the ability to choose from a wide range of spiciness levels, catering to everyone from those who dislike spicy food to spicy food lovers. The minced meat that appears with each scoop of soup adds to the umami, and a special spoon is provided to scoop up even the mince settled at the bottom. The medium-thin straight noodles mix well with the soup and pair perfectly with rice, with many fans enjoying pouring the leftover soup over rice at the end of the meal. The wide variety of the menu is also appealing; in addition to the classic tantanmen, you can encounter a different bowl each time you visit, such as Cheese Tantanmen with torched cheese, Mala Tantanmen with a numbing kick, Curry Tantanmen, creamy Soy Milk Carbonara Tantanmen, and cold Hiyashi Tantanmen in summer. Side dishes are also substantial, including a rice set with freshly fried karaage, fragrant aburi chashu-don (broiled pork bowl), and homemade annin tofu (almond jelly). The bright and cheerful service is also well-regarded, making it popular among female customers and families.

1Before Entering
Located about a 5-minute walk from JR, Keihan, and subway "Yamashina Station" along Sanjo-dori. There is no dedicated parking, so if coming by car, use a nearby coin parking lot. It is popular both day and night, with several groups waiting during lunch and weekends, and sometimes up to 30 minutes on Friday nights. It's smoother to choose your menu while waiting in line. The restaurant has temporary closures a few times a year, so if visiting from a distance, it's recommended to check their official social media.
2Ordering
There is no ticket machine; orders are taken verbally at your assigned seat. The menu is extensive, including the signature tantanmen, as well as cheese, mala, curry, soy milk carbonara, and cold varieties, so it's a good idea to decide before entering. You can choose the spiciness level for tantanmen, but staff might not ask during busy times, so it's best to state your preferred spiciness yourself. If you like spicy food, "辛さ大 (karasa dai, extra spicy)" or Mala Tantanmen is recommended. Combining it with the value karaage rice set is a classic choice. Payment can be made with cash, credit cards, or QR code payment.
3Seating and Receiving
There are about 22 seats, combining counter and table seating. Upon arrival, staff will guide you to your seat. Service is relatively quick, with an estimated 10-15 minutes until your bowl is served. On the table, there are ichimi powder (red chili pepper) and rayu (chili oil), so you can add more spiciness later.
4Other
The minced meat accumulated at the bottom of the soup can be scooped out and enjoyed with the provided spoon. Adding sansho (Japanese pepper) from the table midway through tightens the flavor and changes the impression. For the finish, it's recommended to add grated cheese or rice to enjoy the remaining soup.
