1Before Entering

A street-level shop located about a 5-minute walk southwest from Sakae Station, near Maruei Galleria. It's a small place with only 11 counter seats, and it can get crowded during lunch peaks and weekends, but the turnover is quick. Due to its continuous operation, it's relatively easier to get a seat around 2 PM or in the early evening. Closed on Thursdays.

2Purchasing Tickets and Ordering

Upon entering, purchase a meal ticket from the vending machine immediately inside, then proceed to a counter seat and hand your ticket to the staff. The vending machine displays food photos but lacks English descriptions, so it's best to familiarize yourself with the main menu items like the signature rich seafood tsukemen, spicy tsukemen, and Taiwanese mazesoba beforehand for a smoother experience. Regular, large (550g), and extra-large (700g) noodle portions are available at the same price, but be sure to select the desired portion button on the vending machine. A 150 yen penalty is posted for leaving uneaten noodles, so it's safest to try the regular portion for your first visit. Payment is cash only; credit cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted.

3Seating and Receiving Your Order

Follow the staff's guidance to your seat. After handing over your meal ticket, your order will be served in about 5-7 minutes. The tsukemen noodles are served chilled, allowing you to enjoy the contrast with the hot dipping sauce.

4Other Notes

The table is equipped with various condiments such as garlic soy sauce (ninniku shoyu), spicy miso (karamiso), bonito vinegar (katsuo-zu), fish powder (gyofun), and chopped onions (tamanegi kizami), allowing you to customize the flavor as you like. For the signature rich seafood tsukemen, first taste it as-is, then add garlic soy sauce (ninniku shoyu) later to dramatically change the flavor. Adding bonito vinegar (katsuo-zu) will result in a refreshing aftertaste. If you order Taiwanese mazesoba, it comes with oi-meshi (an extra scoop of rice) so you can finish by mixing it with the leftover sauce. After your meal, inform the staff before leaving.

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya (Ikebukuro): Navigating the Japanese-Only Ticket Machine and a Review of its Robust Miso Ramen

Miso Mendokoro Tasakaya, a miso ramen specialist located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, is just about a 5-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. This shop is known for its hearty miso ramen: a thick, rich, slightly sweet miso broth, firm thick noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and a towering pile of crisp bean sprouts (moyashi) – a truly robust and voluminous bowl. The menu features four main series: Miso Ramen, Kara-Miso Ramen (spicy miso), Aemen (a brothless mixed noodle dish), and IWGP Geki-Kara Ramen (extra hot). This guide, based on our visit on Friday, May 22, 2026 (arrived at 6:39 PM with a 13-person queue), provides photos and tips for first-time visitors to Japan. We'll cover how to navigate the Japanese-only, no-photo ticket vending machine using a color guide, understand the queuing situation (only 9 counter seats and long noodle cooking times mean slower turnover), tips to avoid crowds, and the cash-only payment policy.
