Tsuruichiya Neo
鶴一家neo
Overview
Tsuruichiya neo is an Iekei ramen shop located in the Tsuruya-cho area, north-west exit of Yokohama Station. The former "Tsuruichiya," which operated in the same vicinity, relocated and reopened as "neo." Many say that the quality of the soup significantly improved after the move, as they switched to making the soup in-house (cooking it on the premises). While its lineage is often categorized as Ichi-kei (Ippachi-ya/Matsuichi-ya lineage), it follows its own unique path. The soup is pork bone soy sauce-based, a balanced type where the sharpness of the soy sauce tare, the sweetness of the chicken oil, and the richness of the pork bone overlap. It has a distinct yet not overly sharp flavor, and many comment that the umami increases as you eat. The homemade noodles are slightly flat with a smooth, chewy texture, enjoyable for how they entwine with the soup. The large char siu slices have a moist, low-temperature cooked finish. One of its signature dishes is "Jigoku Ramen," a super spicy menu available in 5 levels of heat. It contains plenty of onions, chili peppers, and chives, and the chili powder on the nori seaweed adds an exciting kick. Unusually for an Iekei shop, they also offer tsukemen (dipping noodles) and "Mala Jigoku Tsukemen" with added numbing spice, with noodle portions available for free increase. Its calm, classic yet modern interior is also a characteristic feature.
How to Order

1Before Entering the Shop
It is located about a 5-minute walk from Yokohama Station's North-West Exit, slightly off a side street in Tsuruya-cho. With its dim lighting and chic exterior, it might not look like a ramen shop at first glance, but the interior is a cozy space with only 10 counter seats. It operates continuously from late morning until early morning, making it accessible late at night or early in the morning. During peak hours, there may be a wait inside or outside the shop, so if there's a queue, line up at the end.
2Purchasing Meal Tickets / Ordering
There is a ticket vending machine to the left of the entrance. It is a touch panel type but has no food photos and only Japanese text with no English guidance. Payment is cash only; cards, e-money, and QR code payments are not accepted, so please prepare cash. For Jigoku Ramen, you can specify the spiciness from 5 levels, and for tsukemen, you can increase the noodle portion up to 3 balls for free. After purchasing your meal ticket, take a seat and hand it to a staff member.
3Seating and Receiving Your Order
When you sit at the counter and hand over your meal ticket, the staff will ask for your preferences (konomi) for noodle firmness (men no katasa), flavor intensity (aji no koisa), and amount of oil (abura no ryo), typical of Iekei style. If you have no particular preference, "normal" (futsu) is fine. For tsukemen, tell them your preferred noodle portion and preferences. Service is relatively quick, taking a few minutes to about 10 minutes.
4Other
On the counter, you'll find various flavor-changing items such as garlic, ground sesame, chili bean paste (tobanjan), vinegar, and pickled cucumbers, allowing you to gradually alter and enjoy the taste in the latter half of your meal. From 8 PM to 7 AM the next day, rice is free and refillable (times may vary). A popular way to eat is to dip the nori seaweed into the soup and combine it with rice.
