Yonakiya
夜鳴きや
Overview
Yonakiya is a long-established Chinese soba specialty shop that has been operating for over 30 years on the first floor of an apartment building in a residential area of Otsuka, Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City. It was once run by a taciturn predecessor, but is now managed by the second generation, with female staff efficiently running the shop. The menu is refreshingly simple, offering only "Chuka Soba" (Chinese noodles) and "Rice," and has long been loved by local regulars. The signature Chuka Soba features a slightly cloudy, orange-colored soy sauce tonkotsu (pork bone) soup. A layer of oil on the surface prevents heat from escaping, allowing you to enjoy the ramen piping hot until the very end. The sharp saltiness of the soy sauce and the unique flavor of the tonkotsu combine, and you can adjust the richness by adding soy sauce from the table to your liking. The noodles are thin and straight, absorbing the soup well, and come with about two large slices of chashu (braised pork). The boiled pork chashu made from thigh meat pairs excellently with the soup. Another specialty is the large pickled daikon radish (takuan) placed on the counter. It's "Kinokawa-zuke," pickled Kishu daikon radish, a specialty of Wakayama, and its freely available sweet taste attracts fans. If in stock, you might also get a large piece of soy-pickled garlic. The shop is also known for its speedy service, with ramen often served within minutes of entering.
How to Order
1Before Entering
It's about a 9-minute walk from Higashino Station on the Tozai Subway Line, located in a residential area along the Nara Kaido road. There are about 4 parking spaces in front of the shop, but they tend to fill up quickly from midday due to its popularity. The shop is open only during lunch hours and closes early once ingredients run out, so it's best to arrive around 11:00 AM when it opens if you want to be sure to eat. It might be sold out after 1:00 PM. Closed on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
2Ordering
There is no ticket machine; orders are placed verbally after taking a seat at the counter. The menu is simple, offering only Chuka Soba (regular/large) and Rice, so you can simply say "Chuka Soba Nami (nami, regular size)" or "Gohan Sho (sho, small rice)." Regulars might specify noodle thickness or whether they want takuan, but for first-timers, Chuka Soba and small rice is the standard. If you prefer a stronger flavor, you can request extra soy sauce (koime, richer flavor) when ordering.
3Seating and Receiving
There are 12 counter seats and one tatami table (6 seats) in the back. Upon arrival, take any available seat. Service is very fast, with your order often delivered in minutes. Cold water and condiments are available on the table.
4Other
Feel free to eat the large takuan on the counter. Regulars enjoy it with rice, and the owner might even recommend it. If in stock, you can ask for soy-pickled garlic to be added for a change of flavor.
